ビバップの産みの親チャーリー・パーカーと、クール・ジャズのパイオニア、レニー・トリスターノの共演録音の集大成です。冒頭に据えた2曲(1951年)での打ち解けた様子は、この2人の巨匠がお互いの音楽を深いところで理解し、共通点を認めあっていたという説を裏付けます。パーカーはまるで羽毛のように浮遊感のあるノリとシャープな切れ味で魅力的なフレーズを紡いでいるのが格別に印象的。そのほか、メトロノーム(ジャズ誌)の選出したオールスター・グループによる1947年(2種)と49年の録音も収録。49年度はパーカーの弟子マイルス・デイビスも参加しています。

ケニー・クラークが電話帳を叩いている。それをバックにチャーリー・パーカーとレニー・トリスターノが演奏する。録音機が回っている１９５１年８月、ニューヨークはトリスターノの自宅。この冒頭２トラックを聴ければ、それは、これまでパーカーを知って彼方に視てきた、トリスターノをリスペクトしてきた、あまたのジャズメンたちの夥しい演奏、が、意識の中空にツリーのように連鎖と旋回が万華鏡。「おれも遠回りしてきたな」と、ジャズがこのように聴こえるまで。

キラ星のごとくの黄金期ジャズメンたちが、執拗なまでの直線定規トリスターノ・メソッドに制圧されて青白い炎をたてている３から１９までのトラックは１９４７年のラジオ番組そのまま収録（サラ・ヴォーンが１曲歌ってます）、アナウンスの時代がかった雰囲気もさながら、どうしてどうして、ビリー・バウアーのギターが聴きもの。ことに１７トラックのバウアーは、あれだね、ピカソ・ギターを手にしたパット・メセニーが半世紀前に居たのか、という。

２０から２４トラックは、トリスターノが率いるその名も「メトロノーム・オール・スターズ」指揮者付き１９４９年の録音、そしてこのメンツ、よりによってメトロノームとは眩暈がしないか？究極のクール・ジャズ、ドリーム・チームだろうか。それにしても、ここでもおれの耳はバウアーのギターに、そのバッキングはなんだ、高柳昌行を知っていたのか、ついジョー・モリスやカート・ローゼンウィンケルに置換してまで聴いてしまう。なんて楽しいんだ、ジャズは。ジャズ史が夢になって響くこのCDをどうぞお聴きください。
