デイヴ・マシューズ自身は、このアルバムのリリースをあまり喜んでいないらしい。誰だって、リリースを見合わせたはずの、気の合わないプロデューサーと作ったアルバムが、ある日突然インターネット上に流れてしまい、ニューヨーク中の海賊盤ショップで売られていたら、快い気はしないだろう。
大雑把に言うと、これが大ヒット作
『Everyday』の前に発売される予定だった「ザ・リリーホワイト・セッションズ」に起こったことだった。しかしマシューズとメンバーたちは、ファンをがっかりさせたままにはせず、再びスタジオに戻り、仕事をやり直した。
この『バステッド・スタッフ』では、荘厳な曲の数々をさらに念入りに作り直し、憂いを帯びた卓越した曲へと昇華させている。<7><9>のような優美な曲では，前のアルバムの陰鬱（いんうつ）な雰囲気が、情感あふれる美しい輝きに置きかえられ、このバンドにありがちなジャズ・ロック路線への強い志向が今回はうまく押さえられいて、曲本来の持ち味がそのまま生かされている。マシューズの思いとは裏腹に、すばらしい作品ができあがった。（Amazon.com --Aidin Vaziri ）

Everyday album. Rather than turn their back on the fans, however, Matthews and company returned to the studio to do the job right. On
Busted Stuff, they revive those solemn songs with diligent intensity, creating lovely swaths of melancholy and transcendence. Elegant tracks like "Grace Is Gone" and "Digging a Ditch" replace the dreary gloss of the last album with dazzling intimacy, and even the band's usual tendency for meandering jazz-rock flights is kept in check by the sheer weight of the material. Impressive stuff, in spite of what Matthews apparently thinks.
