   78年2~3月に行われた待望の初来日公演から、2月28日と3月1日の演奏を収録した、2枚組ライヴアルバムである。
   2年前のローリング・サンダー・レヴューでのラフなムードとは一転、プロフェッショナルなバックバンドに女声コーラスまで引き連れての「ボブ・ディラン・ショー」に、とまどったファンも多かった。だが、このライトでポップにアレンジされた代表曲の数々は、このアルバムでしか聴けない貴重な瞬間を作りだしている。特に日本のファンにとっては、記念すべきライヴ盤だろう。（星野吉男）

78年,ディランが初めて来日した時の,武道館でのコンサートを収録・構成したライヴ盤。この時の日本公演は,’66年のあのオートバイ事故以来の,12年ぶりのワールド・ツアーに先立つものでもあり,その意味でもこのアルバムは貴重な記録だと言える。8人編成のバンドと3人の女性コーラスを従えて,過去16年間の代表曲を大胆なアレンジでプレイするディランはとても力強い。このライヴ盤を聴いて,「京都の龍安寺の石庭で今もなお鳴り続けている」というディランの「心臓の鼓動」を聴きとれる人は少ないだろうが,このライヴ盤を楽しむことは誰にでも出来る。ディランの他のアルバムと同じように,さまざまなやり方で,自由に――。

最初は日本だけのオリジナル企画版だった。が、反響のよさに世界発売になったアルバム。そのくせアレンジは最悪だとか、どうも不評な意見しか聞かない。武道館という日本建物が有名になったのはビートルズが来日した際そこを使用したことで広まったが、このアルバムも日本の武道館を世界に知らしめた一枚。新旧の様々な曲が今までとはまったく違うアレンジで収録されているため、出だしじゃ分からないこともあるようで歌詞が分かるまでお客が静かだったりする。この会場にいた人たちにもかなりの衝撃だったのだろう。全身真っ白なスーツのディランのポスターがレコードには付いていたのだがＣＤには影も形も無い。ボブディランの初来日だったライブがこうしてアルバムとして形になっているのは、日本人として大変嬉しく思う。

批評家たちが何を生み出したのでしょう？とは早川義男の言葉であるけれど、この名作を酷評する批評家など信用に足るものではないということは、聞けばわかる。
確かにアレンジは曲そのものを変えてしまっているものも多く、名曲「I want you」などは、あの軽い独特のリズムから姿を一転させ、しっとりと静かに口ずさむようなバラードと化している。とは言え、一曲目のミスタータンバリンマンから「フォーエバーヤング」「時代は変わる」まで、余すことなくボブディランのエネルギーが直に伝わってくる。僕個人から言わせれば全てが名曲なので、とにかく聞いて欲しいですとしか言えません。けれど、これは紛う事なき名盤です。是非、いつか聞いて欲しい。

大学受験の時期と重なったために私は行けなかったディランの歴史的初来日のライヴ盤。何ゆえか評論家うけせず、聴衆もなじみの曲の大胆なアレンジに度肝をぬかれたのか、大人しい。しかし、ディランはライヴが最高と確信し、過去の曲を塗り替えるスリリングさがたまらない私のようなファンにとって、本作は７０年代の他のライヴ「偉大なる復活」「激しい雨」等に決してひけをとらない作品である。ミスター・タンブリン・マンやラヴ・マイナス・ゼロのアレンジは最高ではないか。是非７０年代ディランのライヴ傑作群の最後を飾るこのアルバムを一人でも多くの人に聴いてもらいたいと思う。

ところで、本作は１９９３年にＣＤ化されたきりなんですね。今年「偉大なる復活」等４作についてやったように、次は是非本作と「激しい雨」のデジタル・リマスター＆紙ジャケ版発売を期待します。
