   耳に心地よいことばのリズム、鮮やかな色づかいのコラージュによるイラスト…。名作絵本『Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?』（邦題『くまさん くまさん なにみてるの？』）は、大勢の子どもたちを魅了してきた。本書の特徴は、ページをめくるたびに登場する新しい動物が、次に出てくる動物をさりげなく教えてくれることだ。

 「うまさん、うまさん、あおいうまさん、なにみてるの？ みどりいろのかえるをみてるの」
   このパターンが何度も繰り返されるため、まだ本が読めない小さな子どもでも、そのうちお母さんと一緒に声を合わせるようになる。そのうえ、次に出てくる動物を簡単に当てることもできるのだ。だが、おはなしの最後では、次に出てくるもののヒントはなし。「見てのおたのしみ」となっている。

   華やかでふんだんなイラストを目で確認しながら、響きのよい文章の繰り返しが楽しめる本書は、子どもたちに読書の楽しさを教えてくれる最高の絵本だ。エリック・カールは、『The Very Hungry Caterpillar』（邦題『はらぺこあおむし』）、『The Grouchy Ladybug』（邦題『ごきげんななめのてんとうむし』）、『Have You Seen My Cat?』（邦題『ぼくのねこ みなかった？』）でも有名な絵本作家。あふれんばかりの色彩と陽気なスタイルによる大胆なイラストを得意とする彼は、絵本界でもぬきんでた存在として一目置かれている。

バラエティ豊かな動物たちの目を通して、彼らの仲間たちを紹介してもらおう。ページいっぱいのクマの絵。「クマさん、クマさん、なに見てるの?」「ぼくを見る赤いトリを見ているの」次のページをめくると、これまたページいっぱいの赤いトリの絵。「トリさん、トリさん、なに見てるの?」「私を見る黄色いアヒルを見ているの」
このように、動物が次に登場する動物を見ている設定になっている。テンポの良い文章とライム(韻)のリズムに、身体を動かさずにはいられない。そして、知らないうちに子どもは動物の名前と色を覚えて、自分で読み出してしまう1冊だ。(と)

Carle's books all have an educational element  they teach about animals, numbers, colours and nature  but a big part of their appeal is that they are not didactic or laboured, but light and entertaining. There's warmth and humour there too (Junior )
