Book Description
This historical, biographical dictionary covers those individuals who have held the “Great Offices of State” (i.e., the posts of prime minister, foreign secretary [formerly secretary of state for the Northern Department], home secretary [formerly secretary of state for the Southern Department], and Chancellor of the Exchequer) in Britain since 1730. It also includes the four politicians who occupied the post of secretary of state for the American colonies, two of whom never held any of the four “Great Offices.”
