A treasure-trove of 27 songs spanning two discs, Tell Tale Signs features previously unreleased recordings and alternate versions of tracks from sessions which generated some of Bob Dylan's most acclaimed and commercially successful albums from the last two decades, including Time Out Of Mind, 'Love And Theft', Modern Times and Oh Mercy.

もう、びっくりしてしまった。
『バイオグラフ』や『ブートレック・シリーズ』に収められたアウトテイクの曲を聴くと、いつも「どうしてこんな名曲がオフィシャル盤から洩れているのか」と驚くのだけれど、今回はそれ以上だった。というのも、アルバムとして傑作だから。
『オー・マーシー』（89年）から『モダン・タイムズ』（06年）までの未発表バージョン（ライブを含む）、アウトテイクが収められた、いわば寄せ集めアルバムなのだが、とてもそう聴こえない。この20年間を通してのベストアルバム（もっともよいアルバム）ではないだろうか。
個々のアルバムはそのつど聴いてきたけど、これが一番いいように思う。全体にしっとりと落ち着いていて、しみじみとした印象を与える。それでいて、それぞれの曲が強い。
やはりダニエル・ラノアのプロデュースにしっくりこなかったものがあったのではないだろうか（自伝で少しこだわって触れているし）。『TELL TALE SIGNS（秘密の暴露）』というタイトルが意味するのは、そのあたりのことではないのだろうか。「じつは、こんなテイストのバージョンもあったのだ」と。
「ディグニティ」「エヴリシング・イズ・ブロークン」「シリーズ・オブ・ドリームズ」「リング・ゼム・ベルズ（ライブ）」など、こちらのバージョンのほうが素直に聴ける。とくに「ボーン・イン・タイム」は感涙もの。
いちばんの驚きは、『血の轍』時代の奔放なイマジネーションによる曲作りと歌の力はまったく衰えていなかったということかもしれない。
というわけで、最近のディランを聴いていなかった人、「ブートレックだから食指が伸びなかった」という人も必聴です。
