1966年度作品。ディランの7枚目のアルバムであるが、60年代に生まれた最高のロック・アルバムでもある。詩人とロックンローラーとしての二面性が見事に結晶した完成度の高い作品で彼の最高傑作との呼び声も高い。様々な人間関係にインスパイアされて生まれた詩の数々は時に複雑で難解ながらも深みのある豊かな出来になった。ラブ・ソングと断定できる歌についてもウィットや奥深い意味を持った格言とも言える内容に仕上がっており、ディランがいかに同時代のアーティストの中で抜きん出ていたかが計り知れる。フォーク・ロックのスタイルをより発展させた音作りにより、以前にも増してバラエティに富んだ作品となった。ロビー・ロバートソン、アル・クーパーなどのミュージシャンが参加、LPでは二枚組で発売された大作である。「雨の日の女」「アイ・ウォント・ユー」「女の如く」など収録。

内容に関しては、多言を要しない。ディランの代表作にして、ロックの最大級の名盤。「女の如く」や「アイ・ウォント・ユー」といった名曲に加え、様々な表情を持つ楽曲が全１４曲。個人的には「メンフィス・ブルース・アゲイン」も好きです。もともと二枚組ＬＰだったのだが、旧盤ＣＤでは、一枚のディスクに詰め込まれていた。それがハイブリッド盤では、一枚に入りきらないと言う事で、また二枚組に戻っている。その分、値段は旧盤の二倍以上になってしまったが、音質はバッチリ向上。さらに、一枚のＣＤだと、さすがにちょっと疲れを感じたのだが、二枚に分かれると、気軽に取り出して聴けるようになった。不思議なものだ。ＤＩＳＣ-１を聴いて一息つき、コーヒーを淹れてＤＩＳＣ-２へ。僕はそんな風に聴いている。デジパックを開くと、ディランの全身像も見られます。曲名が、ジャケットのどこにも無いのは、ちょっと不便だけど。

一番ディランがその才能を、可能性を世界に知らしめたアルバム。ロックと詩の融合、「愛してる」とかの単純なラブソングから、音楽にはもっとたくさんの事、日常のことから政治や宗教のことまで、どんなことでもできるということを教えてくれた。このアルバムが完成しなければ、今の音楽も変わっていたはずだと、評論家が語れば「俺がやらなくても誰かがやっただろう」と語るディラン。
それはもっともなのだが、実際このアルバムがあり、今の世界に繋がっている以上、このアルバムはロックの歴史の中でとても重要な一枚なのである。
このアルバムの後のディランは、これらのイメージにとらわれるのを避け、また別の道を歩くのだが・・・。

興味が無い人も一度聞いてみてください。歴史の中に出てくるアルバムであることは確かです。

　このアルバムの曲は、ほとんどが、ライヴセッションでの録音。おそらく、数あるテイクのなかから、より「完全な」テイクがおさめられている。
　しかし、本作には、随所に、一般的な意味での演奏ミスもある。しかし、Dylanは、ミスを気にしない。気づいていないのではなく、気にしていない。その結果、アルバム（あるいは楽曲）に「すきま」ができる。もうすこしのぼれば頂上なのに、Dylanは平行移動で疾走するばかり。聴き手は、最初、演奏ミスや、遊び曲に違和感をおぼえ、「すきま」を埋めたい衝動にかられる。しかし、「すきま」を跳び越えてひたすら疾走するDylanのリズムにまきこまれ、そのうち、「すきま」が心地よくすら感じられるようになる。
　Dylanが、「すきま」を埋めようとしていたら、本作は、名盤にはなったであろうが、飽きる名盤となったであろう。完全なアルバムには、スリルがない。本作でおこる、Dylanの声のすべり、のび、そしてそれにからむギターフレーズがおりなす、一瞬の音のひらめき。Dylanの、ときにはフライングし、ときには出遅れる歌と、ドラムのフィルインからうまれる、ダイナミズム。そのような、偶然による奇跡の瞬間は、完全な録音を残そうとすると、失われる。
　おそらく、Dylanは、ほとんど本能によって、そのことをわかっていた。本作において、Dylanは、ただ必然の結果を追い求めるのではなく、ミスも含めて、偶然を大事にしようとしている。しかも、その意識があいまいであるところが、またよい。なぜなら、偶然を追い求めようとすると、かえって、その意識自体が必然になるからである。そうすると、偶然は、けっきょく必然にとりこまれてしまう。
　本作では、Dylanは必然と偶然、意識と無意識、真剣とふざけのはざまでゆれている。その結果、本作は、不完全であることにより、かえって完全な作品となった。
