Great book, but...

This is really a great book for what it is. I feel that the author really translates the works of Bill Evans to guitar really well. All of the songs are even in the original key. My only gripe is that they are all very short. The longest one is less than three minutes, which is why I gave it a 4 and not a 5.

This book is fantastic. If I had to say anything negative, I would only say that the arrangements are a little bit short, but I don't necessarily blame Sid because even the quantity given here must have taken ages. Besides, the point of the book seems more to be a guide in interpreting the piano language of Bill Evans into guitar, not making concert length arrangements for one to perform. It is a reference for lush and intricate voicings and how to create piano voicings by combining open and fretted strings. And obviously it's more than just a voicing encyclopedia; he has transcribed Evans' recordings and where the guitar doesn't allow the amount of voices, he's been forced to choose the most important notes. Marvelous.
BE WARNED. Don't pay much attention to the tablature, some of it is obviously wrong since the first time I looked at some of the phrases, I instantly came up with a more logical position or fingering. I can almost guarantee that these TABS are by the editor and not by Sid Jacobs himself. Use an open mind and experiment. A great purchase in my opinion.

You Must be Kidding Me ... Not Even Close!

I purchased the book and CD package. I was so excited, I could hardly wait to receive it. Wow, what a let down.
On the CD, the musicanship is just not cutting it, it is embarrasingly choppy playing. The guitarist seems to be reading the piece as opposed to having mastered it. Where's the fluidity? This is embarrisingly amaturish and painful to listen to. Folks, I just can't listen to it and I tried many, many times. I've asked others to listen to it, thinking it might be me. It lack tenderness, warmth and soul and timing.
No spirit here what so ever. It reminds me of a musican who loves and respects an artist with all of their heart but just can't play or even arrange the artist. That's OK, but when you put a eye catching cover on it and pass it off saying here it is! That's different. If you don't believe me ask the publisher to make some sound bites of this product available.
I'm sorry to be so harsh but I bought the dramatic cover and now I'm telling it like it is. There is nothing inside this book but a "can't even listen to it approach to Bill Evan's for guitarist". very little here that's interesting, This come across as a finger style home studio product that lacks warmth,tenderness soul and technique. these are short somewhat complicated by amature feeling pieces. A waste of my time and money. I'm not happy to say it, But ... This is not it! I only commend the author and producer on the attempt.
