Jo Ellen Bogart is the author of many best-selling children’s books, including Jeremiah Learns to Read, Daniel’s Dog, and Gifts. She has degrees in elementary education and psychology from the University of Texas, and she now writes full time. Jo Ellen has won the Ruth Schwartz Award and has been shortlisted for the Mr. Christie’s Book Award. Her first book for Tundra was a biography of Maud Lewis called Capturing Joy: The Story of Maud Lewis. Born in Houston, Texas, she now lives in a pet-filled home in Guelph, Ontario.
Gillian Newland is an artist living and working in Toronto, Ontario. She has a diploma in illustration from Sheridan College. This is her first children’s book. When she is not working, Gillian likes to travel. She tends to be the reclusive sort, but you can sometimes find her sketching on the subway.

Pleasant book with one flaw

A very simple book that's quite pleasing to read aloud about how your perception of size changes depending on what you're comparing the object to. Here's a sampling: (this is from memory so it might not be exact)
"Big and small, big and small, room for all, big and small.
Big Sun, small earth.
Big earth, small mountain.
Big mountain, small tree..."
And it goes down from tree, to man, to child, to kitty, to mouse, to flea. The water color illustrations are gorgeous and my son enjoys this book. Since it's so simple, he's memorized it and recites it sometimes before he goes to bed to soothe himself.
The only thing that really bothers me about the book is the last sentence. "Big sky, big sky, what is bigger than the sky? The Never ending sky." UGH! Isn't that like saying "What is bigger than the moon? The Moon!" I know it's a small thing but it's enough to bump this down to four stars in my book. Otherwise the book is excellent.

Great book, but...

What a GREAT book! Great idea. Entrancing illustrations!! And it's the first book my son 'engaged' enough to really start to focus on the words, recognize them, and anticipate them. Eventually recognizing and naming "Big" and "Small".
But it has 2 drawbacks...I expected it to focus equally on the "room for all" theme, but it didn't :( But more disappointing was the ending....so I rewrote it.
Book says:
"What is smaller than a flea? A world of things too small to see." (has images of amoebas and cells, etc)
"Big sky, Big sky, What is bigger than the sky? The never-ever-ending sky." (with a vague sort of cloudy-sky watercolor...(huh?))
I rewrite it when reading it to my son as:
"What is bigger than the sky? MANY worlds of things TOO big for us to see." Then I explain to him that all the little dots shown are planets as big as ours MANY miles away. All I could come up with, but it's better than "Never-ever-ending sky" IMHO!
