Lipchik first provides a cogent theoretical rationale for SFT and delineates the basic assumptions of the approach. Drawing on the work of Harry Stack Sullivan, Milton Erickson, and Humberto Maturana, she reaffirms some of the prevailing views of solution-focused practitioners while challenging and expanding others. Among the novel and clinically significant ideas discussed is the assertion that emotions are part of every problem and every solution. Extensive case material is used to shed new light on the relational context of SFT and the pivotal role of the therapeutic alliance. Bringing to life not only what an experienced clinician does at particular moments in therapy, but why, the book addresses such vital questions as what to respond to and what to ignore in a solution-focused interview; what to do when clients do not respond to solution-oriented questions or goal definition; and how to formulate the message and task at the end of the session. Also discussed are ways to apply the model to different populations, including couples, families, and involuntary clients, and different situations, including crisis intervention and long-term treatment.
Distilling wisdom gleaned from decades of clinical experience, this book will be read with interest by therapists in a range of settings. It is also a useful text for courses and training programs in the areas of SFT, family therapy, and postmodern therapies.
