Of course Finnish language materials are lacking in the US, but given the price of this item, I decided to give it a try. Besides, when learning a new language, you should try to hear all you can of the language being spoken, as you will most certainly speak/hear a lot more of the language than you will read of it.
The CD tracks range from 1 to 11 minutes long each and cover categories such as basic expressions, eating out, numbers, shopping, etc. The word or phrase is first spoken in English, and then a native speaker gives the Finnish word or phrase, followed by a small pause during which you may repeat the word/phrase. Then the native speaker splits the phrase into parts, followed by a small pause for you to repeat the word/s. Then the word/phrase is spoken a third and final time by the native speaker before moving onto the next word.
My only complaint is that the speakers tend to speak too fast, and even the pauses during the "breaking the phrase down" part are too short for a beginner to try to repeat the phrase. A beginner can't really be expected to stumble through "Voisitekko puhua hitamiin, kiitos?" in a 3 second pause. It's actually frustrating when you're trying to first learn the phrases. Of course, after a couple of times through and after looking at the "phrasebook" (written version of the CD audio), it can be a nice challenge to say a long phrase within short time allotted. But in the beginning, it -can- be quite frustrating.
You can pay $10 for the CD, or you can pay $3 for the Audible edition (which can be downloaded directly to a Kindle). I'm not sure whether the Audible edition can be put on an iPod or burnt onto a CD. I purchased the actual CD, and have put the tracks onto my phone, iPod, and put the CD in the car.
All in all, if you're trying to learn some Finnish, this can be a small supplement for your learning and a break from the boring routine. If you're going to Finland as a tourist for a short time, this will help you learn some really useful phrases, but be prepared to repeat each track many times before you have mastered the phrases. The simple listen/repeat format makes this a useful learning material for in the car or while cleaning the house.
