Highly readable, witty and disturbing, The Bell Jar is Sylvia Plath's only novel and was originally published under a pseudonym in 1963. What it has to say about what women expect of themselves, and what society expects of women, is as sharply relevant today as it has always been.

Plath was an excellent poet but is known to many for this largely autobiographical novel. The Bell Jar tells the story of a gifted young woman's mental breakdown beginning during a summer internship as a junior editor at a magazine in New York City in the early 1950s. The real Plath committed suicide in 1963 and left behind this scathingly sad, honest and perfectly-written book, which remains one of the best-told tales of a woman's descent into insanity.

Reading this novel was like reading a collection of poems. So many things and events are depicted in detail. Plath's style of poems are making pictures through words. In the same way, this novel is picturesque. Esther, the protagonist of this novel works for a fashion magazine for one summer. It was like the stream of depictions of what people wear, other college girls who work with Eshter, and the boys whom Esther dates.

There were some difficuly in understanding this novel. It is because the scene changes not in the order of time. It takes a while to figure out which part comes to where.

使われている英単語がエレガントかつシンプルでとても読み易い。シルヴィアの言葉はまるで映画の影像のコマになって時間の流れとともに現われてくるみたいだ。強烈な個性、あるいは言葉をもつエスターという女性の語りは、アクチュアルに読み手を内面崩壊の直中に引き入れる。その凄まじさは何ともいえない苦痛を読者に与えるけれど、読み続けずにはいられない。物語の最後の三分の一でのジョアンというキャラクターの登場について読み終わった後、しばらく考えさせられた。

ティーンの女の子の精神的な不安定さやもろさがテーマになっています。その代表として主人公が普段の優等生な立場から精神的に追い詰められて病院送りになってしまう話。そしてそんな主人公が特別におかしくなったわけではなく、彼女のように人生が落ちていってしまうことは誰にでも可能性があることをこの本から学びました。

私は英文科で、この本はアメリカ人の先生から薦められて読んだ本です。主人公も大学生なので大学生にお勧めです。ちなみに映画、『１７歳のカルテ』の原作らしいですよ。映画は内容がけっこう違います。映画より原作のthe bell jarの方が私は全然好きです。
