Thomas Fensch has published books about John Steinbeck, Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, James Thurber and Oskar Schindler. His first book about Steinbeck, Steinbeck and Covici: The Story of a Friendship, was reviewed twice by The New York Times, in a daily issue and in the Sunday Book Review, by different authors, both highly laudatory reviews and was highly reviewed elsewhere. It is now considered one of the seminal books in Steinbeck scholarship. It won the Book of the Year award in biography from the Ohioana Library Association in late 1980. He also published Conversations with John Steinbeck, a collection of all the interviews Steinbeck gave during his lifetime; The FBI Files on John Steinbeck and Essential Elements of Steinbeck. Some of his other books include: The Man Who Was Dr. Seuss: The Life and Work of Theodor Geisel; Of Sneetches and Whos and the Good Dr. Seuss: Essays on the Life and Work of Theodor Geisel; The Man Who Was Walter Mitty: The Life and Work of James Thurber; Conversations with James Thurber and Oskar Schindler: The Man, the Book, the Film, the Holocaust and Its Survivors. Fensch also published the previously secret correspondence of John. F. Kennedy and Nikita Kruschchev, The Kennedy-Kruschchev Letters.

A very disappointing book and a waste of my money. 90% of the book is devoted to reprinting various FBI documents reporting on Hemingway and his activities in CUBA. The FBI documents are extremely repetitive in content and contain many instances of unsupported, negative allegations against Hemingway, his character and motives. The author makes no attempt to support or deny the FBI allegations and provides no insight into Hemingway's side of the story. The relationship behind the FBI documents and the book "Islands in the Stream" is not made. The entire book could, at best, be consolidated into a single, short magazine article.Behind Islands in the Stream: Hemingway, Cuba, the FBI and the crook factory
