As someone who had heard portions of this novel at writer's meetings, now that I have read the entire saga, I'm once again daunted by the waves of emotion that move me. McMahon takes his readers to a world we know little about. His long and painful journey draws a road map for all those who are adopted, have adopted, or naively wondered about it.
This subject is by no means fresh, however, the writer's fine style and his eye for details paint a new, vivid image. The reflections are so fresh and his encounters so unique that sometimes I had the impression this was the first adoption story I would read. Mc Mahon not only tells his own tale of "Becoming Patrick", in a way he embodies every child who was ever adopted. This is a must read for it will shed light on a complicated subject that many assume they understand.
