   73年リリースのベストアルバムシリーズの後半。ジャケットの色から「青盤」とも呼ばれる。彼らがライヴ活動を停止してから初めて出したシングルのDISC1<1><2>から、解散が決定的になった後の70年9月にリリースされたDISC2<14>までの28曲を収録。
   サイケ期からシンプルなロックンロールに回帰していく後期のビートルズの流れを追うには最適なアルバムだ。ジャケットの写真は69年にリリースされるはずだった幻のアルバム『ゲット・バック』用に、ファーストアルバムをまねて撮ったもの。（星野吉男）

前記の「赤盤」では初期の躍動感と中期の叙情性が凝縮されているのに対し,こちらの「青盤」では中期の前衛性と後期の円熟味が味わえる。と一言でまとめてしまうのは実はかなり無謀だが。少なくともポピュラー音楽に関心のある人はやはり2枚とも聴かないと。

本アルバムには67年から70年までの代表曲28曲が収められている。ジャケットには何処にもベストという言葉はない。あくまで代表曲という位置付けなのだ。もしあなたがビートルズ1と赤盤青盤のどちらを買おうか迷っているなら赤盤青盤をお薦めします。もしビートルズのとりこになったらオリジナルアルバムを買い揃えればいいだけの話だ。ビートルズの曲は収録アルバムが違うと同じ曲でも違った魅力をみせてくれる。アナログ時代無数の編集盤がみな大ヒットしたのはこのような理由からだ。従って両方のアルバムを買うことは決して無駄なことではないと思う。またビートルズにはナンバーワンヒットではないけど有名な曲がたくさんある。このような理由で1よりも赤盤青盤を薦めるのだ。さて内容だが、一言で言うと最大公約数的内容になっている。つまりファンの支持する曲をもうこれ以上削れないというところまでしぼったような選曲になっているのだ。確かに?マークが付くような曲もある。たがそれを含めてビートルズなのだ。

赤盤と青盤はアナログ・レコードの時に興奮して買いました。それこそレコードの溝が擦れ切るほど愛聴しましたよ。私はここではＣＤ２が好きでＢＡＣＡ ＩＮ ＴＨＥ ＵＳＳＲに始まり最後のＴＨＥ ＬＯＮＧ ＡＮＤ ＷＩＮＤＩＮＧ ＲＯＯＤまで息もつかせずこの流れには今なお聴いても感動ものです。青盤には不作がないまさに完璧な内容ですね。レノンとジョージが亡くなって、Ｂｅａｔｌｅｓそのものは終わりましたけど、そこに残した【音】は、いつまでも私の耳に残り続けるし、これからも聴き入るでしょう。

メンバーそれぞれが個性を発揮しだし、円熟味も芸術性も増してきた、ザ・ビートルズの通称『青盤』。

今は亡き、ザ・ビートルズの一員であった、ジョージ・ハリスン選曲のこれもまた名曲揃いのアルバムである。

その後、メンバー解散という後期の楽曲なので、哀愁を漂わせる色彩を帯びた作品である。

このＣＤ最後の曲-The Long and Winding Road-のポールの歌声も解散前の切ない気持ちが表現されていて、しんみりとした気分にさせられる。

『赤盤』のジャケットと『青盤』のジャケットを見つつ、ザ・ビートルズのメンバーの全員が存命中であり、その中のメンバーの故・ジョージ・ハリスンが選曲したことに意義があり、まさに彼らのBEST『アルバム』として今後も存続し続けるであろう。

ポール・マッカートニーは今どんな気持ちなのであろう。。。
