   解散後の73年にリリースされた決定的ベスト盤、2枚組LPの2セットにわたる1組目が本作。ジャケットの色から「赤盤」と呼ばれている。タイトルどおり、デビュー曲から66年のヒット曲であるDISC2<13>まで、全26曲を収録。
   選曲を主に担当したのはジョージ・ハリスン。シングルのみならず、アルバム中のエポック的な曲も収録されており、通して聴くとライヴ活動をしていた時代のビートルズがどのように成長していったかがよくわかる。ファーストアルバムとは微妙に違うカットでデザインされたジャケットも味がある。（星野吉男）

このアルバムには62年から66年までの代表曲が26曲収められている。ジャケットの何処にもベストという言葉は使われていない。あくまでも代表曲という位置付けだ。もしあなたがビートルズ1とこの赤盤青盤のどちらを買おうか迷っているならこちらを買うことをお薦めする。これを聴いてビートルズのとりこになったら改めてオリジナルアルバムを買い揃えていけばいいだけの話だ。ビートルズの曲は収録アルバムが違うと同じ曲でも違った魅力を再発見できるのだ。だからこそアナログ時代は編集盤でも大ヒットしたのだ。したがってこのアルバムとオリジナルアルバムを両方買うことは無駄なことではないと思う。さてアルバムの内容だが、ファンでなくとも知っている有名曲ばかりだ。決してナンバーワンヒットではないが有名な曲というのがビートルズには多い。そのことも1ではなくこちらを薦める理由のひとつである。このアルバムを一言で言うと最大公約数だ。ファンが支持する曲をこれ以上は削れないというところまでまとめたのが本作なのだ。

ビートルズの曲は誰しも一度は聞いたことあると思います
そんなビートルズですが、若い世代の方にとってはたくさんアルバムが出ているので、何処から入ればいいのかわからず多少とっつきにくい所があるかもしれません
そんな理由でビートルズを敬遠するのはとてももったいないことです
この初期の名曲を集めたベストは通称赤盤と呼ばれ、後期の名曲を集めた青盤とともにビートルズ入門の足がかりとして最適なアルバムです
青盤とあわせれば、初期から後期までの名曲がほとんど網羅できます
また、歌詞カードとともに一曲ごとに解説が書いてあるので、曲がかかれたときのエピソードがわかり理解が深まります
解説を読み興味を持った作品が入ってるオリジナルアルバムから買っていくのがおすすめです

　この赤盤と呼ばれるアルバムは、幼少の頃から家あり、よく聞きつづけてきた愛聴盤です。いやまったく、これが原因でRockにはまることになったのである。
　ビートルズを全く知らない人には、ビートルズの魅力でもあるトゲがないので、あたり障りがなく楽しく聞けると思う。垣間見せる魔法のサウンドに魅せられた人は、オリジナルアルバムを買い漁ることになるだろう。ああ、このレビューを書くと久しぶりにこのアルバムを聞き、ビートルズというものをあまり知らなかった瑞々しさをもう一度体感したくなってきた！親御さんのみなさん。ビートルズを聴くなら、できればお子様のうちに体験させてやってください。
