This is a good self-teaching guide for someone has some music back ground already--possibly with another instrument (stringed) and is seeking to come up to speed on the Banjo. It does not clearly emphasize that it bases itself on the Standard G Tuning, but is commented in the tuning section (they call it "relative" G tuning). This is something that should be made clearer since tuning differences are an issue concerning the Banjo. This of course, if a 1st level book, will predispose you to that tuning. A new student to the instrument might not get that, so that help/lecture should be included in an introduction, if not product description. (A note for Guitar players: be prepared to accept that there is a "high" pitched string on both sides of the Fret-board with a 5-sting Banjo. This is somewhat of a paradigm shift you might not expect, however easily accommodated, especially if you have used alternate tunings on the Guitar. This is not noted which is the sort of (*) detail that is appropriate for a beginner level book.)
This book bypasses (a very good thing) the typical inadequate attempt to introduce Music Theory. I would suggest providing yourself with a separate and focused resource for that subject and possibly review along with this study. It quickly jumps into making a connection with the instrument, with real rhythm notation comments, grafted onto a Tablature format--emphasizing counting with Right Hand Technique. This book focuses more on melody technique with Chord indicators and some fingerboard layout toward the end of the book. Therefore, I would recommend this book with another Banjo Chord book since it does not go far enough to satisfy me. However, the book has value for what it presents if even a little narrowly focused keeping it from being a "great" book (if there were a Grade 2, which I have not seen, book it should be edited back in making this more complete). The spiral binding is a great feature I like seeing in music books. This way they lay flat without fighting with them, and pages breaking out from the otherwise gum binding.
