Bayou Country is the CCR record that slips under the radar. The group's 1969 sophomore release birthed two classic-rock staples--"Born on the Bayou" and "Proud Mary." Then there's the characteristically savvy cover ("Good Golly Miss Molly"), the stretch-out jams ("Graveyard Train" and "Keep on Chooglin"), and a couple of seldom-remarked-upon album tracks ("Bootleg" and "Penthouse Pauper"). And that's it--a little more than a half-hour of the Revival gaining speed but still not firing on all cylinders. 　ＣＣＲは僕が洋楽を聴くことになった重要なグループでした。リアルタイムでは1970年夏の５thの「Cosmos Factory」が発売されたときだったが、全てのアルバムを買って圧倒的なアメリカンロックサウンドを味わい尽くさせてもらった。その後域度と無くＣＤは再発されてきたが、魅力的なものは無く我慢をしていた。ところが今回結成40周年（！）記念というメーカーの上手い策略のなかで発売された本シリーズはSHM-CDとなって飛躍的に音質の向上が予想されたことと、ボーナス音源が追加されていることだった。勿論６thまで全て購入した（７thは追加音源無し）。さて、

　本作は1969年2月の２ndアルバムである。彼等の独特な「音」を完成させた傑作ではある。南部の湿地帯や埃っぽい荒野などの光景を空想させてしまう曲つくりは見事の一言だ。Born On The Bayouの歌詞に遠いアメリカを恋焦がれてしまった諸氏は多いだろう。驚くほど良くなりすぎた音に少し違和感も持ってしまったが、迫力満点でこれはこれで素晴らしい企画だ。

　しかし、僕が３回もでんぐり返しをしてしまったのは追加された４曲のBonus Truckである。８は２の別テイクで５分以上の演奏。９、１０は場所は違うが３人組になった1971年後半の貴重なライブ。ここまでは良い、普通のボーナストラックだ。さて１０だ。これはファンなら垂涎の1969年3月14日Fillmore Westでの貴重なライブ音源だ！。８分48秒の圧倒的なバンド演奏は火傷するほどの熱演で聴いていて失神寸前になった。録音が綺麗なのにも驚いたが、演奏がもの凄く上手いのだ。彼等はシングルヒットを出すだけの柔なロックグループでは無いこと位は十分判っていたが、ここまでしっかり演奏するとは思わなかった。もう降参です。まるでBooker.T,& MG'Sというかアーシーで泥臭い熱演が続く。再発された１st「SuzieQ」にも２曲収録されているので、小出しにしないでドンと完全盤を出してもらえないだろうか？

　オイ！そこの若いの、これを聴けって。おじさん達はナ、こういうのを聴いて育ってきたんだぞ。半端じゃないだろ？これを聴けるまで40年も待ってきたんだぞ！

クリーデンスの出世作というか、我々の世代にとってはアメリカの南部を最初に身近にしてくれた作品です。何といってもBorｎ　On　The　Bayouを最初に聞いた時の不思議な感触は未だに忘れられません。それまでに聞いたことの無いリズムとサウンド、ボーカルもやけに粘っこい感じに私はしびれました。Proud　Maryも同様です。歌詞のニューオリ−ンズやミシシッピーにも魅かれました。ここから私のアメリカ南部への憧憬が始まり、ＴＨＥ ＢＡＮＤや　ＡＬＬＭＡＮへののめり込みが始まったのです。そういう意味では私の人生のターニングポイントとなったアルバムです。

あらゆるルーツミュージックを消化しながら、南部の砂ぼこり、あるいは湿地帯、汗ばむ空気などを体現化したロック。素晴らしいバンドの２作目。（１）と（６）が白眉です。（６）は「グリーン・リヴァー」などと共にベトナム戦争を背景にした映画などのバックに流れたりしますし、ロッククラシックの有線でもしばしば流れてくる名曲。（１）は本当にジョン・フォガティぶしで、じわじわと盛り上がってきて、ぐいぐいと歌い上げていく・・・文字通り汗ばむようなテンションで、南部臭が見事に伝わってきます。（彼らは西海岸のバンドでしたけれど、南部出身かと思わされるほどです。）とうぜん星は５つでしょう！
