書名の通り、リファレンスということで具体的な作例は掲載はありませんが、多くの
機能の効果や違いが画像で確認できるので、制作をする上で作業方法や機能の
確認に役立つ内容。

また、別の3DCGソフトからの乗り換えの際などにも重宝するんじゃないでしょうか。
本書の構成は以下の通り全10章に分かれてます。

第1章 イントロダクション / 第2章 モデリング / 第3章 アニメーション
第4章 キャラクターセットアップ・モーション / 第5章 マテリアルとテクスチャ
第6章 ライティング / 第7章 カメラ / 第8章 レンダリング
第9章 エフェクトとダイナミクス / 第10章 MAXScript

個々の機能解説は深くないですが、第4章ではキャラクターセットアップの手順は
比較的詳細に紹介されています。個人的には第5章のマテリアルとテクスチャの
内容を読んでいて、色々と知識が補完されました。

3DCGの初心者には、情報量が多いので敷居が高いと感じるように思いますが、
これから3ds Maxをがっつりマスターしたい人や学校で勉強中の学生さんは
買っても損はないでしょう。

作例から順に操作を説明していくチュートリアルではなく、
あくまでも目的が決まっていてどう操作したらいいかを調べたい時に読む本です。

ですから、内容は広く浅くで、文字・図も小さいので、
基本操作をある程度理解した方が逆引きに使うのには適していると思います。

ただ、本書の冒頭に書かれていますが、全ての機能を網羅しているわけではありませんので、製品版マニュアルも調べないといけないことがあります。

これまで、3dsmax関係の本を何冊かかって来ましたが、初心者的な私には、
一番ヒットした本です。
一般的な本は、作業の流れなどが記載されており、確かにその通りに行えば
出来るのですが、その流れ以外に、「じゃぁ、ここを触るとどうなるの？」
目の前にあるボタンを押したらどうなる？という事を予め教えてくれるので、
全機能を軽く浅く把握するには、良いと思います。
一つ一つの機能がより詳しく・・・という場合は、別の本で補填する必要が
ありますが、あらかたの機能がフルカラーの図解で記載されているので、
非常に見やすく、また忘れた時に見直すなどに活用できます。

また初めて見る機能や、触った事が無い機能など、どのように変化するのかが
記載されているので、まず自分でも触ってみよう!　という気持ちにさせてくれる
本です。　個人的には、辞書代わりとしてお勧めです。
