８０年発表の５作目。ブロンディの代表作と言うと、明るい日ざしのようなパワー・ポップを聞かせる『Parallel Lines』や『Eat To Beat』あたりが“らしさ”を感じて好きなのだけど、アメリカをコンセプトにしたアンニュイな雰囲気のこのアルバムは完成度がすこぶる高く、最高傑作の名に相応しい作品だと思う。オーケストラを導入した旧い映画のサントラ曲のようなインストの１．から、かなりオールド・スタイルのディスコ曲の２．に入る流れは最高。マリリン・モンローを彷佛とさせるスタンダードっぽい３．近年、ビールのＣＭ曲としても使用されたレゲエの４．(邦題は“夢見るＮｏ．１”) 初期のブロンディを彷佛とさせる５．ブラスを導入したロカビリーっぽい６．も初期っぽい曲。中近東っぽい７．大ヒットした、デビーのラップをフュチャーしたディスコの８．スタンダード・ジャズ風の９．ブロンディなりに (フィル・) スペクター・サウンドを演出した１０．オールドなロックンロールの１１．夢を見るように美しいバラードの１２．そしてこのアルバムはウィンド・チャイムと波の音で静かに幕を閉じる・・・。

これまでどことなくラジカルなものを孕んでいて、聴く側にある程度「身構え」が必要な印象があったのだが、本作はその必要なくすっと耳に馴染むアルバムだ。ドラマティックなオープニングに始まり、邦題 夢見るNo.1（#4 The Tide Is High）やデビー・ハリーが見事なラップを聴かせてくれる#8 Raptureといった名曲が惜しげも無く続く。中でも#10 T-Birdsに見る爽やかさは彼らの源流がパンク・ムーブメントにあったとは信じられない変身ぶりだ。刺を失うことを嫌う向きには残念かもしれないが、ブロンディはパンクロックの一グループであることを脱し、ここに音楽的、力量的にも円熟期を迎えたと言ってもいい。出来栄えと聴きやすさの点で妖女と呼ばれたデビー・ハリーの歌声を一度聴いてみたいという人にもお薦めだ。さらにおまけだが、スネークマンショー「咲坂と桃内のごきげんいかが 1・2・3」はRaptureをモチーフにしていると思うのだがどうだろう。

先日BSでBLONDIEのライブをやっていて、このアルバムをそういえば中学のとき買ったっけなと思い出した次第。
当時はThe Policeやビリージョエルなどが大好きな、横文字音楽に被れた少年だったと自覚していた。
このアルバムも確かTV番組で見かけて買ったような気がする。妖艶なデボラ･ハリーにちょっとドキっとして邪なキモチ込みで買ったのだったかもしれない。
しかし、である。中身はアヴァンギャルド＋キャッチーな不思議な世界だった。POPかと思えばPUNKだったり、当時の尺度でははみだし気味のスタイルだったように思う。
容姿もさることながらデボラの声はセクシー＆クールで、色々な心象を表現している。特にLive It UpやRapture辺りで聴けるクールな声が良いのだ！赤いパンプスで踏みつけられるような！（ってマゾっぽい気分にさせられる）。そうかと思えばHere's Looking At YouやThe Tide Is Highで聴かれるようなふんわりした誘うような声と、張り上げたときのちょと鼻にかかって共鳴する独特な声！
ああっ！思い起こすに言葉がとまらない！とにかく溝が擦り切れるまで聴いた（当時はLP)大好きなアルバムでした。
