Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991, she saw her reputation and her international stature grow the longer she was under house arrest. Upon her release in November 2010, she immediately took up her work with the democracy movement and proved that she remains the most important political force in Burma. Jesper Bengtsson is a journalist who has followed developments in Burma for more than a decade. He is the chairman of the Swedish section of the human-rights organization Reporters sans frontieres (Reporters Without Borders). The author of Burma: A Journey in the Shadow of the Dictatorship (2007), he has also written editorials for the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.
