The geometric shapes and natural forms, captured with exceptional precision in Ernst Haeckel's prints, still influence artists and designers to this day. This volume highlights the research and findings of this natural scientist. Powerful modern microscopes have confirmed the accuracy of Haeckel's prints, which even in their day, became world famous. Haeckel's portfolio, first published between 1899 and 1904 in separate installments, is described in the opening essays. タイトルにペーパーバックとあったので、装丁にはあまり期待していなかったのですが、マットPP加工がほどこしてあり、おしゃれに仕上がっています。それに考えていた以上に大きく、紙の質感もしっかりしていて、丈夫です。
内容ははじめの３０ページほどまでが、ヘッケルについての解説などが載っていて、その後「Art Forms in Nature」が始まります。ヘッケルの超細密画が１００ページに渡って続きます。ヘッケルが熱心に研究したという放散虫の絵はとっても美しくて見ほれてしまいます。
本の最後には、ヘッケルの略歴と作品中の生物の名前の紹介がされています。
「Art Forms in Nature」に掲載されている１００の作品はオールカラーで、本の冒頭には、英文のところどころにヘッケルが描いたであろう、貴重なデッサンが収録されています。
デザインの参考書にも、生物の形態理解にも役に立つ素晴らしい一冊だと思います。

いいですねえ。時間に余裕ができたり、何かに悩んだりした時に取り出して、しばし眺めると、呆然として圧倒されて、そして自分が小さく感じてられて、もやもやが吹き飛びます。
