ここ数年，新作のペーパーバックを購入する際，必ずオーディオブック（ＣＤまたはテープ）とセットで購入しています。そして，まず，ＣＤまたはテープの第１巻を聴いて，ストーリーが把握できるかどうかに挑戦します。耳から理解しようとする際，一番難しいのは登場人物の把握です。たいていはＣＤやテープを聴いただけでは把握が難しいので，ペーバーバックで最初の章を読むことになります。そして，あとは「耳から」と「目から」を行ったり来たりで，何とか最後までたどり着くのです。
シェルダンはほとんど「耳から」把握できる作家です。前作のSKY IS FALLINGもかなりの部分「耳から」理解できました。それだけ内容は易しいのかも知れません。しかし，「耳から」の場合，ずっと聴いていると，得てして眠たくなってしまう作品が多い中，シェルダンはこの先どうなって行くのだろうという期待と共に，飽きることなく先へ先へと進んで行ける作家です。
ボクはミステリーやホラーしか読みませんが，KINGやKOONTZだと「耳から」では少し難しくて途中で挫折してしまうため，シェルダンやスパークスやウッズがちょうどいいのです。
久々の新作もボクにはちょうどいい仕上がりになっています。

Surprised at the poor quality of Sheldon's writing in this one! Single dimension characters, ridiculous situations - from which they somehow escape over and over again. Shallow story line. No real plot.
