a great read

Every once in a while, we stumble on a great read. I loved it, couldn't put it down. I've always liked historical novels, where the author makes a period of time come alive through fictional characters and events. I felt as though I was right there, in Scotland, in India, in New Zeeland. The characters spring to life, the way of everyday life is made real by adept descriptions. The story flows beautifully and of course there is a love story that finds a happy ending, but not without trials and character building events.
