The blackfin icefish produces a natural "antifreeze," enabling it to survive in the subzero waters of the Antarctic. It lacks red blood cells and hence looks rather pale, but has excellent blood circulation, and a strong heart which weighs as much as that of a small mammal. Its large, toothy mouth led to it being called the crocodile fish by 19th-century whalers.

中身のサンプル写真を見てもわかるように、
とにかく豊富な写真（時にはイラスト）と美しいレイアウトで
数多くの動物を紹介しています。
あまりの美しさに、あなたもきっと驚くはず。
内容的には獣、鳥、魚、は虫類、両生類などの
脊椎動物は比較的数多く取り上げていますが、
無脊椎動物（昆虫、軟体動物 etc.)はかなり省略してあります。
とにかく豊富な写真（時にはイラスト）と美しいレイアウトで
数多くの動物を紹介しています。
あまりの美しさに、あなたもきっと驚くはず。
内容的には獣、鳥、魚、は虫類、両生類などの
脊椎動物は比較的数多く取り上げていますが、
無脊椎動物（昆虫、軟体動物 etc.)はかなり省略してあります。
それから、日本の動物はあまり載ってません。
解説は生息域や大きさなどが簡潔に紹介されています。
専門的な用途には不向きだと思いますが、
美術本のようにきれいな図鑑です。

私はほとんど英語が読めないのですが、動物の写真資料として
見るだけなら問題ないだろうと思い購入しました。
同じ本の日本語版のお値段が4倍ほどするようですが
高価な本は損傷を気にして気軽にめくったりできないので
ビジュアル資料として手元に欲しい方は洋書版がお奨めです。
なるべく多くの動物写真を見たいと思いましたので
こちらはページ数からして十分に満足できました。
和書の小学館の図鑑NEOシリーズの「動物」と比べても
構成が似ていて、冒頭にはテーマごとにまとめたページがあり
そちらの写真は大きめで迫力があります。
以降、種目ごと哺乳類や鳥類、両生類や爬虫類など種類豊富に
写真が載っているのですが、写真はやや小さめで概ね一種につき一枚です。
日本の図鑑には載っていない（動物園でも見られない）動物も
載っていました。
（興味を持った動物の写真をもっとたくさん見たい場合は
動物の名前をネットで画像検索にかければ沢山見られますね）
所々コラムに絶滅危惧種の保護に関しての話などが載っていて
お子さんの学習にも向いているかもしれません。
表紙は少し怖いですがとても良い本です。
