   ライノがこの『Amazing Grace』を再リリースしてくれたのは、マーケティングというより愛のなせるわざというべきだろう。音質がより厚みを増し、クリアになっているし、何よりも2日間にわたり教会で行われたセッションが収録されているのだ。というわけで、教会録音（とりわけジェイムズ・クリーヴランドの名調子）がはるかに増えたと同時に、ジョージ・ハリソンの「My Sweet Lord」のクールなオルガン演奏に代表される現代性もぐっと増した内容となっている。

   もともと1972年に2枚組LPで出た『Amazing Grace』は、発表と同時にビルボードのトップ10入りを果たし、古今のもっとも売れたゴスペル・レコードのひとつに仲間入りした。主な録音は、バプティスト派の大きな教会で、信者席に熱烈なオーディエンスを迎え、大編成のファンキーなバンドとサザン・カリフォルニア・コミュニティ・クワイア（ディレクションはフランクリンの先輩格であるクリーヴランド）を従えて行われた。フランクリンの歌声は装飾的できわめて表情豊かでありながら、純粋で抑制が効いており、まるで聖霊と交信しているかのよう。フランクリンの父であり、偉大な牧師であるC.L.フランクリンが誇らしそうな様子でチラリと登場し、「娘は1度も教会を離れたことがないんだ！」ともらすだけのことはある。ハイライトとしては、美しい「Wholy Holy」、11分間に及ぶ、心臓が止まりそうなほど素晴らしい「Amazing Grac」、アイネズ・アンドリュースの感動的な「Mary, Don't You Weep」がある。どこまでもルーツに回帰した本作は、かつてないほど力強いフランクリンの歌唱を示しており、ゴスペル魂を揺さぶる内容となっている。（Mike McGonigal, Amazon.com）

This Rhino re-release of Amazing Grace is at least as much a work of love as of marketing. The sound is beefier and clearer, but most importantly, the two-day church sessions are included. So, there's much more church (specifically, Reverend James Cleveland's marvelous orating) on the record, as well as contemporaryisms such as a cool organ rendition of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord." Originally released as a double LP in 1972, Amazing Grace cracked the Billboard Top 10 on its release, making it one of the best selling gospel records of all time. Grace was recorded in a large Baptist church with an ultraenthusiastic audience in the pews, a full, funky band, and the Southern California Community Choir under the direction of Franklin's mentor, Cleveland. Her voice is melismatic and intensely emotional, yet pure and controlled, as if she is channeling the Holy Ghost. Franklin's father, the brilliant preacher Reverend C.L. Franklin, makes a brief, proud appearance, remarking, "She has never left the church!" Other highlights include the beautiful "Wholy Holy," an 11-minute, heart-stopping "Amazing Grace," and Inez Andrews's stirring "Mary, Don't You Weep." 私は通常盤でこのアルバムを聴いてきました。アリーサの歌唱力のもの凄さに取り憑かれ、以来深く彼女をアーティストとして愛するようになりました。ただ、この完全盤を聴いて、このアルバムについての印象がずいぶんと変わりました。通常盤はアリーサの歌を中心に編集されていましたが、この完全盤は実際の教会でのパフォーマンスを最初から最後まで収録しているところに凄さがあります。通常盤でもアリーサと聴衆とのやりとりの生々しさに驚きましたが、完全盤ではそれ以上です。しかも収録は２日にわたり、ＣＤ１枚目が１日目、２枚目が２日目にあてられています。J.クリーヴランド牧師の信徒たち（ただの「聴衆」ではないのです）とのおしゃべりから始まって、合唱団紹介があってから、「これは最初のアリーサの教会ライヴです。皆さんとのやりとりを生で伝えたいということでライヴ録音です。なにかあったらまた最初から録らなきゃいけなくなるよ」という牧師の味わい深いシャベクリ、アリーサのパフォーマンス（マーヴィン・ゲイの"Wholy Holy"から）、最後のオルガン演奏"My Sweet Lord"まで全く飽きさせません。まるで教会の集会の現場に今いるかのようです。「明日のほうがもっとスゴイから見逃しちゃダメよ」という牧師の言葉で１日目が終わります。２日目の圧巻はアリーサの御父様C.L.フランクリン牧師が登場し、娘の小さい頃一緒に教会で歌ったこと、娘とヨーロッパ公演に行ったときの思い出などを語るところ。アリーサのみならず、牧師、御父様、合唱団、信徒たちの言葉と歌が一つになって、こうして一つのアルバムになっています。イージーに聞き流すのでもなく、批評的に構えるのでもなく、頭から"Spirit"に浸らされて踊らされてしまう、そんなアルバムです。アリーサの歌はもとより、クリーヴランド牧師のシャベクリと信徒たちの反応に、ものすごくディープな「ソウル」を感じました。まさしく「神への捧げもの」です。超オススメ。

意外かもしれないが、アレサ・フランクリンら、女性ソウル・R&Bアーティスト達の多くはゴスペル出身である。教会で賛美をしていてスカウトされたというケースも少なくない。このアルバムはフランクリンが60年代に「ソウルの女王」として一世を風靡した後に作られたもの。「ゴスペル音楽の王」と呼ばれるジェームス・クリーヴランド師の率いるクワイアとの共演は、現在でもフランクリンのアルバムの中で最も人気がある一つである。「Amazing Grace (驚くばかりの)」や「What A Friend We Have In Jesus(いつくしみふかき)」などの有名な賛美歌の数々に加え、キャロル・キングの「You've Got A Friend (君の友達)」の替え歌にトーマス・ドーセイの「Precious Lord (慕いまつる主なるイエスよ)」をミックスさせたバージョンも収録されてある。

　ゴスペルということで、本来は神を称える歌なのですが、アレサ・フランクリンの声自体がもはや神の声といっても過言では無い様に思えます。ＣＤに付いている解説書には、「もし神が女性ソウル・シンガーであったなら、その声はアレサ・フランクリンの声と全く同じだったに違いない｣と書いてありますが、まさにそう思わせるほどにこのＣＤに録音されているアレサ・フランクリンのパフォーマンスは素晴らしいです。
　中でも素晴らしいのは、やはり月並みですが一枚目に収録されている、Amazing Graceでしょう。全部で十分を越える仕上がりになっているのですが、もうこれが本当に「素晴らしい！！」の一言に尽きます！普通、短い曲をあまり長く歌うと何となく中だるみするのですが、このAmazing Graceにはそれがありません。最初から最後まできっちり聴かせてくれます。
　それから、個人的に気になったのは、二枚目に収録されているOld Landmarkです。この曲は映画『ブルース・ブラザーズ』でジェームス・ブラウンがものすごくソウルフルに歌っているので、ソウルの王様とソウルの女王の二人を聞き比べてみるのも面白いです。個人的には、このOld Landmarkに関してはジェームス・ブラウンの方が勝っているかなぁ、という気がするのですが・・・
　音源がライブなので、ゴスペルコンサートの臨場感もそのままに味わえる素晴らしい作品だと思います。
