This book examines the international architectural culture throughout the twentieth-centurya historic period that, perhaps more than other periods in human history, produced innovation, utopias, ideas and projects that strongly shifted our way of living and thinking. The twentieth-century was the great triumph of modernity at all levels of human life on a global scale, and as such, architecture and its leading players were called upon to radically rethink architectural tools, language and ideas. This includes subjects such as: the origins of the Modern with the English Arts and Crafts Movement and the German Werkbund; Futurism; Soviet culture; the Bauhaus and the diverse tendencies of the Modern Movement in the first half of the 1900s; the Second World War and reconstruction; CIAM; Brutalism; Nordic Empiricism and Neo-realism; and then, radical culture; Neo-Rationalism; Post-Modernism; Deconstructionism; and Minimalism. Luca Molinari is an architectural historian and critic, associate professor at the Napoli-Aversa Faculty of Architecture, Director of the Architecture Sector at the Milan Triennial 2000/2004, and currently curator of the Italian Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Biennale of Architecture. Elena Manzo is an architectural historian and professor in the History of Architecture, Faculty of Architecture, University of Napoli-Aversa.
