『ハチミツとクローバー』で大ヒットをとばした羽海野チカの新作です。
『ハチワンダイバー』『しおんの王』が現在進行形で注目されている「将棋マンガ」というジャンルへの作者の参入は正直やや意外でした。

主人公は幼いときに家族をなくした17歳のプロ棋士、桐山零。1巻では彼の棋士としての生活と、あかり・ひなた・モモの三姉妹との交流をメインにストーリーは進みます。

『ハチクロ』が青春の喜びと痛みをともに見せる作品であったのに対して、本作はコメディ部分で緩急をつけながらも、どちらかというと哀しい印象の作品です。零は多くのものを失ったキャラクターとして描かれており、彼を受けいれ居場所をつくってくれる三姉妹もまた家族をなくしています。

また本作は「才能」をめぐる物語でもあります。零が家族の事故死の後、養父である棋士に引き取られ、現在の一人ぐらしに至るまでを語るエピソードが本書のラストにおさめられています。このエピソードは「才能」がときに持つ者にも、持たない者にも等しく残酷なものになりうることを示しており、本巻の白眉だと思います。

『ハチクロ』ではあまり見られなかった、写実性の高い書きこまれた絵がときおりあらわれるのも興味深いです。前作とはちがった種類のリアルを見せようという作者の意志が感じられます。少女誌から青年誌に発表の場を移した点も象徴的です。

裏表紙には「様々な人間が、何かを取り戻していく優しい物語」と作品紹介がなされています。次巻以降、零たちが何かを取り戻していく姿を見守りたいと思わせる作品です。

前作「はちみつとクロバー」では　「生きていく上で生じる孤独、悩み」「青年の自立｣「身近な人間の死を乗り越えていく」といったテーマを
前作では主役格の7人に負わせていた。
しかしこの作品では「桐山零」という主人公一人に全て背負わせている。

かなり重いテーマに挑んでいるのだが、喜怒哀楽をバランスよく書く作者の腕で、まったく
読む側に重さを感じさせないものとなっている。

物語はまだ序盤であり、これから面白くなっていくところです。未読の方、是非一緒に応援しましょう！

「ハチクロ」ファンだった方、キャラクターの性格が前作に出てきた人たちと（良い意味で）ダブる部分があるので、とても楽しめると思います。

「ハチクロ」が大好きで、作者の次の連載を楽しみにしてました。
が、同時に。「ハチクロが好き過ぎて、次のが受け入れられなかったら
どうしよう・・」という不安もありました。

実際、主人がたまにヤングアニマルを買ってくるのですが主人に「棋士の
主人公で楽しいよー」と聞いたけど、棋士〜??って感じで喰わず嫌いでした。
けど、モノは試しにと1巻を買って読んでみたら・・

いいですね。前作を裏切らないくらいの話しでした。
内容等は、他の方が詳しく書いてくださってるので、そちらを。

家族を亡くした主人公・主人公を受け入れる3姉妹も大事な人を亡くしてます。
それでも繋がりを持ちながら、生きようと懸命です。
才能がある故に悩む主人公・無いがために劣等感を持ってしまう義理の家族や
友人。
それでも、皆何かを掴もうと戦ってます。

全体的には暗い話しですが、作者の独特のギャグや絵でそんな事を感じさせな
いくらい、楽しく読めます。

2巻が出るのか楽しみです。
