A symbol glimpsed at both murder scenes leads to a racist hate group, but the taunting killer strikes again and again, leaving deliberate clues and eluding the police ever more cleverly. In the meantime, each of the women has a personal stake at risk--and the killer knows who they are.

2nd Chance speeds along at a Formula One pace through many tight curves, but unlike recent entries in the Alex Cross series, it doesn't sacrifice good characters to a twisted plot. Lindsay's the star, but there's a fine esprit de corps among the four women, who are even better developed here than in the first book. What makes them both convincing and interesting as a criminal-justice juggernaut is their willingness to stick their necks out, even if they suffer for it. If you haven't picked up a James Patterson novel in a while, this is a great time to start anew. --Barrie Trinkle

Patterson is the maestro behind such winners as Cat and Mouse and Roses are Red, but his Alex Cross books are familiar territory for readers. His new team, however, are individually characterised with great skill, and though the short time we spend with each of them forces concision on the author--and his mysterious co-writer Andrew Gross's--part, the customary skills are all brought into play in this diverting mystery. "1st to Die"で登場した4人の女性友達からなるthe Women's Murder Clubシリーズの第二弾である。第一作目で登場人物の設定が終了しているので、事件そのものを取り上げるスペースが豊富に与えられているはずだが、プロットとしては、第一作目の方が面白い。

Pattersonは最近かなりの作品を出版しているが、その質は少し落ちていると言わざるを得ない。この作品も、これだけを取り上げると読んで損はないというレベルには仕上がっているのだが、「乗っている」Pattersonの作品に比べると今ひとつだ。

なお、この作品を最初に読むと人物紹介が少ないために、プロットについていくのが難しいところがある。やはり"1st to Die"を読んでからこの作品を読むべきだろうと思う。

Pattersonならもっと娯楽性に富んだ作品を書けるはずである。読んでも読まなくてもよい、ぐらいの作品は彼には似合わない。

女性捜査官を中心に、地方検事補、検死官、新聞記者の4人から成る女性4人のグループが、サンフランシスコを舞台にお互いに情報を交換しながら、結束して事件を解決していくPattersonの新シリーズ第2作。今回は、教会の前で起きた乱射事件をはじめとする連続殺人事件の謎を解いていくが、そこに主人公が久々に再会した父親の過去の秘密が絡み、一見無関係と思われた一連の事件が一つに繋がっていく。いつもの如く短い章で区切るPatterson特有のスタイルで、テンポよくストーリーが展開し、最後にどんでん返しが待っている。しかし、第1作に比べると、何か物足りない。テンポが速い分、迫り来る緊迫感が十分伝わって来ないような気がする。読んで損ということはないが、Pattersonの作品としては上位には位置しない。英!語は、Pattersonの作品にしては若干読みにくい所もあるが、難しくはない。

　英語の小説は注意しないで読んでいると、主人公が黒人か白人か分からなくなることはあるが、この小説の主人公は白人と思っていました。多分そうだと思いますが。
　男性作家なので、主人公は女性でも男性向きのストーリーです。検死官(黒人、夫、子ども持ち)と検事補（白人、夫持ち）と新聞記者(多分白人、独身)と刑事の4人の女性が協力して難事件を解決するストーリーで、展開はスピーディーです。
　Alexシリーズに比べると見劣りしますが、まだ、新鮮ですし、この作者の、文章が短く、読みやすいという利点は大きなメリットと思います。
