Berlin-based Stefan Betke's second album is an astonishing example of synthetic dub music. Created using an array of ancient and creaky gear (including something called a Waldorf 4 Pole-filter, which gives the artist both his name and distinctive sound), this sumptuous feast of minimalism bears more resemblance to the work of the greatest Jamaican sound engineers like
Lee Perry and
King Tubby than his contemporaries in the German electronic scene. Betke claims to have stumbled on his style entirely by accident, but tracks like "Fahren" and the terrific "Streit" resonate timelessly. Clicks and scratchy noises throughout give a convincingly warm feel, as if the machines involved are working under stress. This is a beautiful record, certain to be ecognised as a classic.
