本書には、ポターのペットのねずみ、トム・サムとハンカ・マンカが、主人公として登場します。本の中に出てくる人形の家は、ポターの担当編集者ノーマン・ウォーンの姪が、実際に持っていたものがモデルです。ポターは、2匹のねずみが巣の中にものを運びこむ様子を見ていたとき、人形たちの留守にねずみが家を荒らしに行くお話を思いついたそうです。1904年刊。

One day Hunca Munca and Tom Thumb, two young mice who live in a children's nursery, decide to explore the beautiful doll's house made of red brick, with real muslin curtains in the windows. After the dolls are taken for their walk by the girl who owns them, the mice sneak up the stairs into the dolls' dining room. What should they find but a sumptuous feast of lobster, ham, fish, pudding, pears and oranges! But to their dismay they discover the food is made of plaster and paint -- not good to eat at all. In a huff, the disappointed mice make some mischief of their own, and by the time the dolls return, their house has been turned upside down.
