The year is 1984; the scene is London, largest population center of Airstrip One.
Airstrip One is part of the vast political entity Oceania, which is eternally at war with one of two other vast entities, Eurasia and Eastasia. At any moment, depending upon current alignments, all existing records show either that Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia and allied with Eastasia, or that it has always been at war with Eastasia and allied with Eurasia. Winston Smith knows this, because his work at the Ministry of Truth involves the constant "correction" of such records. "'Who controls the past,' ran the Party slogan, 'controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.'"
In a grim city and a terrifying country, where Big Brother is always Watching You and the Thought Police can practically read your mind, Winston is a man in grave danger for the simple reason that his memory still functions. He knows the Party's official image of the world is a fluid fiction. He knows the Party controls the people by feeding them lies and narrowing their imaginations through a process of bewilderment and brutalization that alienates each individual from his fellows and deprives him of every liberating human pursuit from reasoned inquiry to sexual passion. Drawn into a forbidden love affair, Winston finds the courage to join a secret revolutionary organization called The Brotherhood, dedicated to the destruction of the Party. Together with his beloved Julia, he hazards his life in a deadly match against the powers that be.
Newspeak, doublethink, thoughtcrime--in 1984, George Orwell created a whole vocabulary of words concerning totalitarian control that have since passed into our common vocabulary. More importantly, he has portrayed a chillingly credible dystopia. 冷戦下の西側諸国において反共産主義のバイブルとして持ち上げられすぎた感もありますが、それを差し引いても、この作品は良くできています。1984は西洋においてある種の共産主義像を作り上げましたし、この作品中の造語は英語の一般語彙にいくつも取り込まれました。現在においても、英語圏ではこの作品に頻繁に言及されるので、（政治的趣向はどうであれ）文化を学ぶという意味でも、必ず読んでおく必要があるでしょう。
読めるのであれば、できれば翻訳より原文が望ましいのはどの本でも同じでしょうが、本書は、上記の文化的理由により、原文で読むメリットが特に大きい本だと思います。

"Nineteen Eighty-four" is a remarkable book written by George Orwell. Its harsh style creates an authentic picture of a state turned by men themselves into hell where freedom is nonexisted, war is praised, and ignorance is encouraged.
People under the control of the party have no freedom exept to kill themselves. If they commit or seem to commit thougtcrime, the Thought Police will get them without fail and they will be vaporized as though the very existance of them had not been existed from the start. The party deletes any records related to the criminals, even the memory of them.
George Orwell also has coined new and potent words of warning for us all, such as "Newspeak", "Doublethink", "Big Brother" and "the Thought Police".

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY
IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.
BIG BROTHER IS WATHING YOU.
The messages that the book delivers have not lost its power even today.

A man of keen observation, George Orwell had already noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper, but when he personally went to the Spanish war as a soldier, saw what was actually happening there, and learned about how it was reported to the world, he realized how little he knew. Great battles were reported where there had been no fighting, and nothing was reported where hundreds of men had been killed. Troops who had fought bravely were denounced as cowards, and traitors and others who had never seen a shot fired were hailed as heroes. It was reported to the world that there was an enormous Russian army in Spain, but in fact there were only a handful of Russians there. In addition, leading newspapers in London retailed these lies and influential intellectuals built emotional superstructures over events that had never happened. It was certain that the whole things were moved by certain intentional forces. At those facts Orwell must have thought of a nightmare world in which the Leader, or some ruling clique, controls not only the future, but also the past. People in those days would have thought such a world unimaginable, but, through his personal experiences, Orwell was firmly convinced that the nightmare was becoming a reality. Without this firm conviction, he couldn’t have written this book with such striking and picturesque force nor with such convincing realism. Undoubtedly one of the most important books produced in the 20th century.
