【プロフィール】
1974年に米国ロサンゼルスで結成。オリジナル・メンバーはデヴィッド・リー・ロス(vo)、エディ・ヴァン・ヘイレン(g)、マイケル・アンソニー(b)、アレックス・ヴァン・ヘイレン(ds)。78年にアルバム『炎の導火線』でデビュー。エディのテクニカルで超絶的なギターとデヴィッドのパワフルなヴォーカル、派手なアクションで人気を集め、83年発表の6作目『1984』と初の全米ナンバー・ワンとなったシングル「ジャンプ」の大ヒットで頂点に立つ。86年にデイヴが脱退してソロ活動を始めたため、後任のヴォーカリストに元モントローズのサミー・ヘイガーが加入、アメリカを代表する正統的ハード・ロック・バンドへと成長する。サミーの脱退後、98年に元エクストリームのゲイリー・シェローンが参加、『ヴァン・ヘイレンIII』を発表するが、ゲイリーは脱退。エディの病気治療のため活動停止していたが、サミーが復帰、2004年に全米ツアーを行ない、活動を再開している。

エディの弾くシンセサイザーのインストゥルメンタル曲「１９８４」から流れ込む「ジャンプ」はおそらくほとんどの方が一度は耳にしたことのある曲でしょう。企画物のコンピレーション・アルバムでは必ずと言っていいほど選ばれる超有名曲です。

全世界のロック・ファンに衝撃を与えたデビュー作『炎の導火線』で、ライト・ハンド奏法をはじめとするエディ・ヴァンへイレンの超絶ギターは世界中のギター・キッズから絶大な支持を得ていましたが、決して全てのリスナーから人気を集めたというわけではありませんでした。
本作は彼らがロック・バンドとして初めて全てのリスナーに認知され、商業的にも大ヒットしたアルバムで、８０年代を代表する名盤でもあります。

１曲目の「１９８４」に見られるように、スーパー・ギタリストとして名高いエディのシンセサイザー奏者としてのセンスも光ります。また、本作には彼らの代表曲である爽快なロック・ナンバー「パナマ」も収録されています。

デビュー・アルバムと比べると、かなり洗練されているため、攻撃性やインパクトに欠ける印象は否めません。
しかし、その分ポップで親しみやすい曲が多いので、万人受けする内容と言えます。それに、もちろんエディのギター・テクニックは健在です。

ドライブのときに聴くと気持ちいいアルバムです。

この１９８４は、正しく８０’ｓサウンド花盛りの１９８４年にリリースされました。
洋楽全盛期８０年代でも、この年は特に印象深い衝撃的な曲が多かったと思います。
イエスのロンリー・ハートもこの年でした。
その８４年で、ひときわ輝いていたのがこのアルバム収録のジャンプでしたね。
ヨーロッパやエイジアが盛んに使用していたシンセサイザーキーボードのあの音色。
ジャンプもイントロで印象的に使われています。
このアルバムは、ジャンプだけではありません。最後までポップに弾け飛んでいます！！
８０’ｓコレクションから絶対に外せない傑作ですよ。
その当時大学生だったボクは、下宿部屋でアナログＬＰのジャンプを大音量で流し、
ストレス発散していました〜ぁ。
あぁ懐かし〜〜

売れましたからねぇ、本作。

あまりにも有名な「JUMP」。

エディの単調なキーボードプレイが、功を奏してヒットしましたが、う〜ん？

デイヴのラストを飾ったアルバムとしか印象が無い。

これならジャーニーのアルバムの方が聞き応えがある。
（ジャーニーは大好きなので、決して皮肉ではなく。）
