If you are a horror fan, avoid this book at all costs. Only those who like to snicker and make snide comments about the horror genre will get anything out of this. This is ostensibly a book about the worst films ever made, yet Steve Miller displays his ignorance by including several very good, and even fantastic horror films. Suspiria, The Black Cat (1934), The Ruins, Cemetery Man, Creature From the Black Lagoon and so on. Miller clearly knows little about horror films, and all the Betcha Didn't Know trivia will draw a great big "No S***" from any self-respecting horror fan. Miller's reasoning for why some of these films "suck" is also extremely goofy and in no one truly make a movie "suck". The Black Cat? It sucks because it isn't actually based on Poe. This is also why The Raven sucks. (So what? That has no reflection on the quality of the movie itself.) The classic Creature From the Black Lagoon? It sucks because the characters act more like hunters than scientists. (Which is part of the point of the whole movie.) And From Beyond? Again, it wasn't based closely enough on Lovecraft. Although Miller admits it is a pretty good movie...which begs the question of why it's included in the book. Brilliant.
Steve Miller is someone who clearly just hates the horror genre, and takes on the usual arrogant, snide attitude such writers usually take. In doing so he, ironically, has written a book that can easily be labeled one of the worst film books ever written. Indeed, if you hate the horror genre, you may enjoy it. You can laugh along with Mr. Miller about how stupid all we horror fans are. If, however, you enjoy the genre, this book will only cause you to feel angry, to raise your eyebrows in confusion, and to simply laugh at Miller's "amazing" trivia (New World Pictures was founded by Roger Corman? You don't say!!!)
Steve Miller has no idea what a bad film is. He also gives the impression that he even considers a movie to "suck" if it's violent or gory. He needs to avoid horror films altogether, and certainly shouldn't have the arrogance to write about them. Stick with Michael Bay blockbusters and romantic comedies Mr. Miller...the horror genre has plenty of good scribes writing books about it.
A terrible book. Worse even than Monster-A-Go-Go.
