この本はフィクションではあるが、ストーリーは、インドの現実を基にして、展開している。格差社会、暴力、孤児、売春など、絶望的な生活のなかで暮らす主人公が、そのなかで生き抜こうとする過程で、様々なことを学んでいく。それらが、クイズ番組で勝ち抜いていく糧となる。
主人公の経験が、偶然にクイズに出題されたわけではなく、主人公の正義感、まじめさ、絶望に屈しないたくましさが、彼を導く。決して運ではなく、彼の人生観が、彼の人生を救う。
救われない人々の描写もあり、残酷な部分もある。著者はインド人の外交官であり、こと細かな描写が、ストーリー展開を、よりリアル感のあるものに仕立てている。もし、ストーリーに、この描写がなければ、薄っぺらいものになっていたかと思う。
インドの悲しい現実を反映したこの小説に対して、「面白い」というのは不謹慎かと思うが、とにかく引き込まれた。雰囲気は、ドミニク・ラピエールの「歓喜の街カルカッタ」を軽くしたような感じ。ショッキングであり、スリリングであり、最後にはほっとさせられる本書は、自分にとっては、今年ベスト１の小説。お勧めです。

4.0 out of 5 stars 社会派調だが、サスペンステイストを持つ面白さ, 2006/11/19
ストリートチルドレンのあまりに哀しい生活が描かれている。インドが舞台であるが、最近の経済発展の中で、切り捨てられたような階層の貧しさが、表現されている。

でもその中で、健気に、そしてある意味では、たくましく生きていく主人公の姿にほっとする。

クイズ・ミりオネアに出場した主人公が、出題に対してどうして正解を続けられたのか。その理由が、主人公の子供から大人への成長ストーリーとして展開していく。

それは、上質のサスペンスを読んでいるようで、読み進むに連れて、どんどん引き込まれていく。と同時に”人の幸せとは”といったことを考えさせられる、様々な人との交流が興味深い。

人の優しさもあふれていて、面白い本だ。

外交官が自分の国の現実をフィクションを通して描いている。えぐい描写も多々あるけれど、インドで実際問題になっていることばかり。日本の官僚に、ここまで自国の問題点を公表できる奴がいるのか？我が『美しい国』の汚い面を沢山知っているでしょうに。そんなん出しちゃうと、アラブの国で大使をやってた人のようにクビになるんだろうなぁ。アメリカでも日本でも、『元』という肩書きが付くと急に発言しだすけど、この本を出した作者が現役で外交官を続けているんだからインド、意外とすごいな。
