1982年に浮上した上関原子力発電所計画。その対岸・祝島で反対運動を続けてきた人々の姿が、報道写真家・福島菊次郎氏からカメラを渡された主婦の手によって、臨場感あふれる写真で綴られている。写真集という体裁だが、解説文も豊富で、これ一冊で上関原発の歴史がかなり分かる。

旅行で祝島に訪れたことがあった私は、偶然この本を手にして衝撃を受けた。あの島がこんなに辛くて重い歴史を抱えていたとは。原発計画を強行する中国電力に対して、浜に居座って徹夜で抗議する女性たち、漁船を並べて阻止する漁師ら、それでも強引に割り込んでくる中電の警備員や船。数々の選挙不正や買収工作、脅迫が飛び交う中で、反対・推進に揺れる人間ドラマ・・・

こんなことが今の日本でも起きているのか!? マスメディアには取り上げられない真実をいくつも知り、この大問題を小さな漁民だけで抱え込んでいることに、やりきれない気持ちになった。上関原発の恩恵を受けるであろう広島や大阪の人らは、この事実を知らずして原発の是非を議論する資格はないのではなかろうか。そんなジャーナリズムのメッセージを感じる価値ある記録だと思う。
