かつて一大遊郭が栄えた、閉ざされた島。夢喰いの獏、雷魚などの伝説が残る島で、本土を追われた人々は自治組織を作り、独自の文化を営んでいる。捨て子の白亜とスケキヨは、この島で捨て子の姉弟として育った。伝説の遊女の名を継ぐ姉・白亜と、デンキを放つ弟・スケキヨ。ふたりは互いのみを拠りどころに生きてきた。スケキヨは、あるきっかけから薬学の知識を身につける。しかし、その美貌ゆえ、悪評高い裏華町に売られてしまう 。離れ離れになり動揺したふたりは、ある夜、過ちを犯し仲違いしてしまう。成長した白亜もまた廓へ売られ、やがて島随一の美しい遊女となる。スケキヨのことが忘れられず、無感覚のまま身をひさぐ毎日。彼女は遊郭の女郎や裏華町の男達を通じて徐々にスケキヨへと近づいて行くが、彼の周囲には不穏な噂が漂っていた。強く惹 きあい、拒絶を恐れ近づけない姉弟。ふたりが再び寄り添うとき、島にも変化が……。

本土から隔絶された島を舞台に、姉弟の魂の絆を綴った、官能美溢れる伝奇小説である。島に伝承する伝説の遊女と同じ名を持つ白亜の、波乱に満ちた境涯と弟・スケキヨへの思慕が切ない。
著者の独特の世界を作り上げる才は賛賞に値するものだ。人物の細緻な心理描写、比喩といったものも適格に整えられており、この壮美過ぎる物語が、とても著者のデビュー作だとは思えない。
特に、感心したのは、本土にはあって島にはない「デンキ」を、互いに想いを共有しながらもそれを相手に通じさせることの叶わない姉弟の煩悶のメタファーとして用いた、その感性である。この研磨されたセンスは、素人のものでは到底あり得ない。
冒頭の一文から、その幻想的な世界観に引き込まれ、興味深く読んだ。姉弟が引き離される辺りまでは読み応えがあった。だが、白亜の身請け辺りから、有り体な時代小説の様な展開になってしまったのにはげんなりだ。ラストの白亜と蓮沼との心中騒ぎ等という少女趣味染みた場面に至っては、すっかり意気消沈してしまい、後は読み終わるまで惰性でページを繰り続ける有り様だった。
書き割りや役者の演技が完璧でも、肝腎の脚本が竜頭蛇尾では、一流の芝居にはならない。誠に優れた著者の作家としての資質には敬意を表するが、遺憾ながらも、あと一歩、推すには至らなかった次第である。

舞台設定が面白い。
江戸時代の遊郭かと思われるのだが、
本土には電気が通っていて、最近は温暖化の影響で…
などの記述もあり、現代の何処か？かと思わせる。
ここは日本ではないのかもしれない。
いつか、何処かで…。
夢のようであり、また妖しげでアンニュイな世界。

巨大な魚と遊女の伝説。
伝説の遊女と同じ名前を持つ白亜とスケキヨ。
引き付け合いながらも、退けあう二人。

とても新人とは思えない描写と、世界観。
次の作品がとても楽しみです。

装丁に惹かれて読んでみました。

日本のような、そうでないような不思議な島。
電気もない、その島は、遊郭だった。
そこに住む二人の姉弟、白亜とスケキヨ。

なんというか、あらすじを書きにくい話なのですが、
とても雰囲気があります。
じっとりと湿って暗い、遊郭。
その中でひっそりと生きる美しい師弟。
島の伝説（巨大な魚と遊女の伝説）が下敷きになっており、
「生きている」という実感をもてない、白亜の物語とオーバーラップします。

ちょっと耽美で、ちょっとエロ。
じゅうぶん「萌え」の要素もあって、なかなかに読み応えがあります。
完成度の高い作品ですが、次はどういうものを書くのか、興味津々です。
