老人ホームで現実に嘆息する、ちょっと洒落の効いたお爺ちゃん二人が、年甲斐もなくスリルを求めてリンゴ泥棒をしたり、目を輝かせて車の設計をする姿は不思議な実感を伴って胸に迫り、派手な描写が無いにも関わらず、気持ちの良い高揚感を覚えました。神林作品において普段は煩く感じる入念な機械の説明も、この作品に限ってはクルマの良さを伝えるのに一役買っており、違和感なく読むことが出来ます。こんな老後を送りたい！と本気で年をとるのが楽しみになってしまう魅力的な一冊。素直に読めます。

　人類が肉体を捨て、巨大な仮想空間で何もかもが実現可能で、死という終わりすらない人生を送ろうとしていた未来。
　そこにはドライバーによってコントロールされ、疾走することができる「クルマ」は存在せず、あるのは乗る者を目的地へと運ぶだけの「自動車」だけだった。
「ほんとうのクルマがつくりたい」

　漠然とした想いに駆られた主人公は「クルマ」の設計を始める。
　そして遙かな未来、一枚の設計図が発見される。
　それは元は意識の入れ物だった箱だけを残して滅亡した人類が描いた「クルマの設計図」だった。

　人間と機械の境界線へのアプローチを続ける著者の、もっとも明快な答えの一つが本書であるといえるのではないか。

　ここには人類を裏切る機械は存在しない。
　ただ機械の望むように、自分の望むようにコントロールすればそれに忠実に答えてくれる機械「クルマ」が登場する。
「クルマ」への想い、「クルマ」と一体化する喜びがさわやかに描かれ、ラストには何か表現の難しい切なさが残る傑作。

今までの神林作品と違う~。ドライ＆テクニカル、ナイーブな所も独自なセンスとリズムであっさり斬って爽快なところ。。。それが神林流だった。でもこの『魂の駆動体』はストレートにアツアツだ。
ヤケドしそうなくらいに老人コンビが夢を追う、追う、追う！爽快だ。彼が書いてきた少年でこんなにも、少年らしい夢を持っていた人物はいただろうか？・・・神林作品はすべて読んでいるけれど、ちょと、思いつかない。
面白い。。。気持ちが前向きにならざるえない本だ。
