宮本作品は出版される度、まさに寝食忘れて一気に読んでしまいます。
この作品も、上下とも心揺さぶられながら読み終えました。
言葉にしてしまうと、とても陳腐ですが、本当に素晴らしい。
この一言です。
自分が人の親になって、今までの作品も改めて読んでみましたが、
この作品も含め、私が子供に伝えたい事、そして親の私が忘れてはならない事、
その多くを宮本作品から学んでいる気がします。
子供が大きくなったら、絶対に勧めたい作品です。
心が豊かになりました。一人でも多くの方に読んで欲しいです。

『１Q８４』を読んだせいか、本書にも父と子、ひいてはキリスト教的な考えがテーマとして見えてきてしまった。阿部轍正の生き方と、その最期、そしてそのことにより影響を受けた彼の「子ども」たちの図式はどうしてもそこに行き着いてしまう。また戦争がこの通称、骸骨ビルに影を落としている。

　今まで知らなかった戦争の事実が本書には細かく散りばめられている。たとえば阿部が引き取った戦争孤児たち。戦争孤児には、戦災孤児、引揚げ孤児、一般孤児、棄迷児と分けられる。一番酷な存在が、棄迷児だ。きっと彼らはその後、他の戦争孤児以上に生きていくのが困難なのではないだろうか。

　本書は、骸骨ビルと呼ばれた杉山ビルのオーナー、阿部が戦争孤児を６人引き取って、中には進学や就職が困難になるとの理由から、養子にしたりし、生涯独身を貫いた、その後の物語だ。時は平成６年、八木省三郎（ヤギショー）が家電メーカーを早期退職して、就いた仕事が、杉山ビルからいまだに住み着いている１１人を立ち退かせることだった。

　その中で触れ合う住人たちの物語（中には「メグ」という奇妙な存在もある）が展開する。それと並行して、阿部が育てた子どものうち、桐田夏美という女性が思春期の７年間、阿部に性的暴行を受けていたという訴訟を起こし、失意の阿部はそのことを否定もせず亡くなっているが、そこに隠された謎が解明されていく。しかも何者かが八木を妨害すべく、手を引かないと家族に危害を加えるとの脅迫文を送ってきたりもする。

　血のつながりのない者たちが家族となり、そしてそこで見つけていくものとは？そこでテーマになっていることは、普遍的なものでもあり、時々ふと考えるものであったりするものかもしれず、決して特殊な物語ではなく、誰もが時に考えるものでもあるかもしれない。

この作品の冒頭は凄い。虚を衝かれ、いきなりぐいと引き込まれた。
なんともよくわからない迫力、凄味がある。
この著者はむしろ敬遠してきたが、面白い。一気に上巻を読んだ。早く読み進めたい、それでいて残り頁が惜しい。面白い。
