ストーリーの内容自体もさる事ながら、心理描写にスリルを感じました。口にはしないけれども、心の中では考えている事、特に、「これを言ったら人格を疑われるのでは･･･。」と思われるような事を、鮮明に描写しています。怖い者見たさのようなスリルで読み続けました。心理描写に優れているこの作者の作品の中でも、特に優れている１冊です。

ミステリー小説かと思いつつ、読み始めたのですが実際は殺人事件の被害者と加害者家族のドキュメントとも言える生々しい作品でした。強い人間が最悪の状況を乗り切って行くようなきれいごととして描かず、弱い人間がいかに運命に翻弄されていくかを赤裸々に描いており私事のようにどきどきしながら読みました。
加害者はともかく被害者家族には誰でも突発的、偶発的に成りうる訳で、加害者家族同様、世間やマスコミからバッシングされながら生きて行くという理不尽さは納得が行きませんがそれが現実かもしれません。そういった犯罪に対しての知り得なかった現実を認識させられた気がします。

読んでいる最中は気持ちが滅入り、胃に石が溜まるような感覚を味わったが読み終えたあと思ったほど重くはならなかった。それは主人公がどん底から立ち直っていく様が上手く描かれているからだろうか。。。
テーマが被害者の家族と加害者の家族という難しい内容のなかで作者が言いたかった事がなんとなく理解できたような気がした。
もともと彼女の作品は愛読書のひとつであるが最近の長編ははずれがないように思える。
ひとつ要望があるとすれば加害者と被害者の当人でしかわかりえない心の葛藤などが少しでも描いてほしかった気がする。
ただこの本には加害者の子供が登場する続編もあるらしいので是非読むつもりである。
