　この余りにも高名な作品を、今更読もうと思ったのは、07年大河ドラマの題材になった、というただそれだけ。なのですが、読みはじめたら余りにも面白くて、一気呵成に最後まで読んでしまった。

　戦国時代、甲斐･武田信玄の最強軍団を支えた異形の軍師・山本勘助。その謎に包まれた半生を、文豪・井上靖が想像力豊かに描いた時代文学の傑作。
誰からも愛されず誰も愛すことなく闇の中を生きてきた男が、その殺伐とした人生の最期に見つけた、“命を賭して守るべきもの”とはなんだったのか…。

命がけで人を信じ、守り、そしてまた同じだけの激しさで人を憎み、命を狙う。刃の上を歩くような壮絶な緊張感と、それが生み出す個々人の強さや輝き。
それを描き出す文章そのものは、あきれるほど簡潔で抑制的、そして静謐。
しかし、だからこそ行間から奔流の様に溢れ出す、ロマンティシズム、センチメンタリズム、リシシズムが、読むものの胸を熱く打つ。
これを“格調”とか“品位”と言うのでしょうか。

こういう美しい日本語で編まれた物語こそ若者に読んでもらいたいと思う。

※マニアックな話で恐縮ですが、個人的には、後書きを『金沢』『時間』の吉田健一が書いているのも、嬉しいサプライズでした。

井上靖の時代小説は、司馬遼太郎との作品とはまた違った味わいがある。
司馬の小説はある種の歴史に対する冷徹さを感じるのに対し、井上靖は温かさを感じる。
風林火山は、山本勘助の武田家への仕官から川中島までの話であり、武田信玄の物語ではない。
全編を通して、勘助、由布姫、信玄の心の交わり、心情の機微が短いながら丁寧に描かれている。
山本勘助という一人の軍師（であったかどうかは実際は定かではない）を描いたことにより、歴史へ彩りを加えた井上靖という人はやはり素晴らしい方だったのだと思う。

　正直なところ、序盤はそれほど山本勘助という人物に魅力を感じませんでした。しかし、勘助の目を通して描かれる晴信や由布姫の姿を見ていくうちに、だんだんと勘助に感情移入していきました。

　物語の最後を飾る川中島の戦いでは、両軍の陣形や戦闘ぶりが鮮明に目に浮かんでくるようで、勘助とともに信玄を守り、戦い抜いた感覚を味わいました。最後の１０数ページを読んだ後は思わず目頭が熱くなりました。読後感は最高です。
