内容紹介

この作品も「長屋紳士録」同様、戦後直後ならではの題材が基になっている。戦争で夫を亡くしたと思って再婚したり、他の男と暮らしているところに、夫が復員してきたりといった悲劇はたくさんあったようですが、この作品の主人公である妻(田中絹代)と夫(佐野周二)も、いつまでも戦争の傷跡を引っ張ることになります。お互いに愛し合っているのに、忌まわしい過去の過ちのために、昔に戻れない夫婦。田中絹代が日本映画界において、名優と称される理由が子の映画を見れば納得できるでしょう。カメラワーク等、いつもの小津作品とは違う作風なのも見所です。

小津監督戦後間もない作品、復員するはずの夫の帰りを一人息子と待つ妻の役を田中絹代が熱演、階段から落ちるシーンはひょっとすると本人自らではないかとおもう。子供が急性大腸カタルにかかりその医療費をめぐってとった行動は、あっとおどろきですが、責任感の強さは今の親に見せてやりたいぐらいです。
いろんなことをみんなが真剣に考えているのがすごく新鮮です。あと、終戦まもなくの東京の様子、原っぱの空襲のなごりもスクリーンから感じることができます。小津作品のほのぼのさはないのですが、田中絹代の熱演はすごいとおもいます。

　最初から最後まで、田中絹代にヤラレテしまった。とても可愛らしい仕草。男好きのすると言われてしまった表情。うーん、こんなにいい女なんだぁ。性的表現がない分、かえってそそられる。男達の好奇に満ちた表情もとてもリアルでした。やっぱり小津さんは、すごいですなぁ。

　田中絹代といえば小津作品よりも溝口映画の方で映画史に残る評価を得ているが、まあ、それは監督の個人的なイレ上げがあったり、溝口映画の演出のドギツさ等の理由も大きい。この作品の田中絹代は貞淑な悲劇の妻を演じているが、こういう役もやはり巧い。今の感覚でいうと、決して美人ではないのだけど、やはり大女優ですね。

　ストーリー的には、序盤の苦難を夫婦二人が各々どう克服するか、という一点だけに焦点が当たっている。シンプルな分、今の映画のテンポに慣れた人は単調で間延びした印象を受けるかもしれない。ただ、この主人公夫婦のようなカップルは敗戦直後の日本にはそれこそゴロゴロいたと思われ、「もっと強く生きるんだ」という終盤での夫の台詞は、そういう同時代人へのメッセージになっていたのではないかと思います。

　なお、終盤の有名な「階段」のシーンは、小津映画には珍しく衝撃的なアクションがあります。このシーンのためだけでも、小津ファンはこの映画を見る価値があるでしょう。
