　著者は近代西欧史において出現した「革命｣ついて以下のように述べている。革命とは自由の創設であり、自由が姿を現すことの出来る空間を保証する政治体の創設である。革命を理解する上で決定的なのは、自由の観念と新しい始りの経験とが同時的であるということである。「生命、自由、財産」そのものではなく、それらが人間の奪うべからざる権利であるあることを認めたのが革命の成果であった。自由の内容は公的関係への参加であり、貧困などの束縛からの解放ではない。革命の目的が社会問題の解決となるとそれがテロルを導き、そのテロルこそ革命を破滅に追いやる。革命は、革命が創設を目的とするなら、創設をもたらした革命の精神こそ革命自体の脅威なるという難問を内包する。等々。
　以上の考察は、省略して言えば、ルソーの思想に影響されたフランス革命は悲劇として失敗したがその革命の精神は受け継がれ、モンテスキューの思想の影響が大きかったアメリカ革命は革命の成果をもたらしたがその精神は忘却されて継承されず、マルクスの思想に導かれたロシア革命は革命自体が悲劇の失敗に終わった、という著者の歴史解釈と対応している。
　この本が著された時代においては、どちらを向いても受け入れられそうもない考えに見えるが、人間の社会における創設の一つである「革命」の意味を深く考えさせてくれる本なので是非若い方に読んでもらいたいと思います。

非常に難解。一回読み通してから、訳者あとがきと解説を読んで、
そして二回目を読んだところで、ようやく全体像を捉えることができた。

革命の成功とは、人民が権力に参加するための積極的な政治的自由
を確立すること、すなわち共和政の樹立であるという観点から、革命
について論じる。革命とは「自由の創設」であって、「解放のための闘い」
と同一視してはならない。

その観点から個々の革命について評価すると、アメリカ革命は成功した
革命であり、フランス革命とそれに続く形のロシア革命は失敗した革命
である。革命が成功するためには、統治形態への深い関心が必要であっ
て、フランス革命においては統治形態よりも貧困という社会問題の解決
に関心が寄せられたため、「革命そのものを失った」(p.78)のである。

ハンナ・アレントは1906年生まれのユダヤ系ドイツ人政治思想家です。 ハイデガー
やヤスパースに学んだのち、ナチスの迫害を受け、アメリカに亡命しました。ナチズム
やスターリニズムなどの全体主義を生んだ現代社会の病理を究明し、対等な対話を
する空間、そこで生まれる人々の 自由を本質とする「活動」こそが大切であると説き
ました。

アレントは自由を有する政治活動のあり方の古典的モデルとして、古代 ギリシャの
ポリスをあげています。ポリスのあり方は専制政治とは異な りますし、現代の多くの
政党政治とも異なっています。それはもっと人 びとが直接お互いの顔を見て、話し、
聞き、語り合った空間なのです。

ポリスが現代社会にそのままあてはまるとは思えません。しかし、現代 の日本の
ように、すでに「貧困」の問題は大方克服し、むしろ政治的無関心が広がりつつ
ある社会において、アレントの主張は、次の政治体制 のありかたを考えるのに
大変重要なヒントを含んでいるのではないか、 と思えます。
