ぼくはこの作品に勇気をもらった。
この作品には、書きづらいことがとても多く書いてある。それは過去の栄光であったり、その逆の過酷な体験であったり、自分の失敗談であったり、そして親しい人の死である。
作者は、それを時にギャグとして笑いながら、しかしたいていがやさしい、また丁寧な眼差しで描いている。そこには、作者の持つこの世界に対する愛があり、そしてやさしさがある。
ここには、あるマンガ家の青春と、その生きた時代とが克明に描かれている。副題に「1978〜1983」とあるが、ここに描かれているのは、まさにその5年間のことでもあるのだ。70年代後半から80年代初頭にかけての日本というものも、ここには描かれている。

この作品は、すばらしい作品である。マンガ、青春、栄光、挫折、友情、死など、ろいろな魅力が詰まっているが、それらは一言で言うならば「人生」である。
ここには人生が描かれている。この作品を読むと、生きることの勇気がわく。

小林まこと氏の「週刊少年マガジン連載中の思い出」とは単に執筆時の驚異的な仕事量や体調不良等の自身の苦労事だけではなく、連載を通じて沢山出来た仲間そのものが思い出であり、
中でも志半ばで亡くなられた大和田夏希氏、小野新二氏の両名と「新人三馬鹿」としてふざけながらも切磋琢磨し合った時間こそが一番の思い出なのだと小林氏の巧みな画力と構成で見事に綴られています。

創刊50周年を記念して本誌で様々な作家がゲストで執筆されていましたが皆1回1話だけであったのに対し小林氏だけは全13話計約200ページの気合いの入った連載でした。
週刊少年マガジンの歴史を語るなら、小林まことを思い出すなら、同時期に共に輝いていたあの2人の事も思い出して欲しい、忘れないで欲しいとの思いだったのでしょう。

１・２の三四郎が連載されていた当時に本誌を読まれていた人は必見です。

小林まことのマンガは殆んど読んできたが、ボンボンコミックスから発売の「ガブリン」はさすがについていけず、単行本は一巻を買っただけだったので、彼の存在をしばらく忘れかけていたのだが、書店でこのマンガを見つけたときには本当に嬉しかった。勿論、即購入。爆笑するつもりで読み始めた。

相変わらずのオトボケ具合は健在だし、彼のマンガの特徴である熱血するお笑いも健在だった。しかも、ネタは自分自身だ。おもしろくない訳はない。ホロリとしながらも笑わせてもらった。だけど、このマンガには結構つらい場面も描かれている。それもライバルでもあり友人でもあった二人のマンガ家の死だ。

「１・２の三四郎」連載当時、小林まことと合わせて「新人３バカトリオ」と呼ばれていた二人のマンガ家、大和田夏季、小野新二だ。二人とも若くして亡くなってしまったのだが、このマンガにはそんな彼等と小林との関係が濃密に（もちろん笑いを交えて）描かれている。きっと彼にとって、この二人の存在はとても大きなものだったのだろう。笑いながらも少し切なくなってしまった。

少年マガジンに連載されていたというこの作品、連載をもっとも楽しみにしていたのは誰だろうか。もしかしたら一般読者ではなく、執筆（連載）依頼した編集部、そして当時の編集者達だったのかもしれない。
