世界的にもよく知られている
「銀座」について、
その都市空間がどのようにできたか、
が丹念に書かれた１冊。

都市としての銀座というと、
一般的には、
明治のレンガ街からはじまったように
思われているらしい。

しかし、著者は、
すでに、江戸時代にその礎が築かれ、
そのまんまその上に、
現代の銀座が築かれているのだと言う。

新橋から銀座を抜ける銀座通り、
銀座から日本橋へ続く京橋通り、
そして、日本橋と浅草をつなぐ本町通り、
これらの道が、道幅が違っている。
それを、その造られていく過程からひもいていく
様子は、都市の歴史空間を探偵しているよう。

じっくりと腰をすえて読めば、
治世者の考えから、人々の暮らしまで
見えてくるはずだ。

非常な労作で、
読み応えがある。
