データマイニングはホットなテーマだがセミナーに出る、人に話しを聞くという以外には知識を得る手段はかぎられていた。唯一「データマイニング手法」ベリー、海文堂出版がしっかりした本であろう。 この本は新書ながらカバーする領域が豊富で、初めてデータマイニングとはなにかを知る人にはうってつけである。

　これはデーマイニングというより、人工知能の入門書といったほうが
最適である。ニューラルネットと人工知能論の章があるが、人工知能の
解説といった感じである。ニューラルネットは、生物学としての脳から
解説している。人工知能は学習の仕組みから解説している。
　肝心のコンピュータシステムとしてのデータマイニングは取り上げて

いないので、データマイニングを学んだことの無い人に結構お勧めかも
しれない。全般的に数式は使ってなく。とにかく、どういう仕組みで、
知識を獲得するのかと概略を知るのに手がかりとなる。

本書は“データマイニング”の入門書ということになっている。とは言っても、昔からある多変量解析のようなデータマイニングの手法を紹介しているわけではない。本書で紹介しているデータマイニングの手法は、ここ十年、二十年の間に発展してきた比較的新しい手法だと思われる。具体的に紹介されている手法はニューラルネットや人工知能、自己組織化マップ、連関規則などで、どの手法も実例を交えつつ説明している。しかし、本書の説明でそれらの手法を理解するのは難しいと思われる。なぜならば、随所に多変量解析や実験計画、推測統計などの用語や考え方が説明もなしに使われているからである。そもそも扱う題材が簡単ではないので、仕方ないことなのかもしれないが、もう少し工夫があっても良いように思う。
結論を言えば、本書を読みこなすにはある程度の各種統計手法の知識が要求されるということである。この事実を知らない上にこの手の内容に詳しくない人が本書を読むと、退屈でつまらない本というだけで終わってしまう可能性が大いにある。この点は注意が必要である。
