　著者の一人である弁護士の小澤英明氏は，イリタヤ国という架空の国を引き合いに出して，「登録景観設計士制度」を提唱している。保存の必要性を感傷的に訴えるだけに終わらず，具体策を提案しているのが本書の特徴だ。

日比谷の三信ビルが、有志による保存活動空しく、解体作業中である。
民間企業が保有する歴史的価値のある建造物を、経済合理性を維持しつつ保存することができないものか、この本もそこに頭を悩ましている。
ここでは、全国の歴史的建造物の写真とデータが掲載されている。
この価格でこれだけの写真とデータの量は、すばらしい本だと思う。
いわゆる美しい建築をノスタルジックに集めた本ではなく、増田氏の写真も、感傷的にならずに建築と美の構造を凝視しようとしている。
その意味で、非常に堅い印象の本であるが、よく読むと最後にとても洒落の効いた日本の景観保護についての提言がある。

　この本は、少し文章が堅苦しいのとこの値段でこのぺ-ジ数は仕方ないのですが・・・ちょっと、全体像が解りにくくなってるような・・・きがするような・・・。という感じでしょうか。それでも全体の出来としてはかなり優秀な本で気合を入れて読もうとする方には最適です。（堅苦しいところが、文章自体は、ページ数の割りにすくないです。」
　この値段に見合うか？と、いうことですが・・・。写真のできのよさから考えると妥当かそれより少ししたというところでしょうか（大判であったなら星5でした。）こんなところに住みたいという夢を見る人よりは、こんなところがありますという知識的なものを求める方むきかと思われます。
