素晴らしい短編集です。前作の「スコーレＮｏ．４」が出色の出来だったので、期待を込めて読みました。「スコーレＮｏ．４」のゆったりと流れるような時間が、短編だとどうなふうに描かれるのだろうと思いましたが、これが非常によくできていて、短編集なのにまるで長編のように読めるのです。１２話が少しずつ少しずつ重なっていく。それがゆるやかで自然で、一冊を読み終える頃には登場人物たちがとてもいとしく感じられました。そして、もう一度最初から読み直したくなるのです。二度目に読むと、また違った物語が立ち上がるようでした。

名作『スコーレNo.4』の作者による連作短編集。
繊細で優しい宮下節と、揺ぎ無い眩しい希望が
各短編のラストを飾り、美しい出来。

しかし連載の都合上、1.テーマが絞られており
2.各短編の長さに制限があり、3.統一感を出すためか
同じキャラクターをやや強引に随所に登場させている点
が全体を通して読んだときに窮屈な印象を与えてしまう。

モノローグが多いせいか、頭の中でキャラクターを
切り替えるのに戸惑う読者もいるだろう。
とまあ不満な点はあるけれど、
本書に続いて発売された第三作品集『よろこびの歌』は
『スコーレNo.4』に劣らぬ傑作である。
今後も最も注目すべき作家の一人であろう。

宮下奈都さんのまとまった作品を、どんなに読みたかっただろうか。

初出は雑誌「旅」での連載らしく、旅をキーワードとする連作短編が
１２編収められている。
さまざまなシチュエーションで、それぞれの主人公たちが、迷ったり
立ち止まったり、日常のなかで滓のように重なってゆく
思いに向き合っている。
地に足の着いた文体ながら、どこか明るさを湛えているのは、
心というものの不可思議な働きを、作者が知っているからだ。
１２人の主人公たちが、遠く近く重なり合い、その背中や影が、
作中を行き交う、その塩梅。
先の作品が生きて、あとの作品のなかに登場する驚き。
皆、同じ地平にいて、そこここで確かな歩みを残している。

振り返り、前を見、凛とした眼を明日に向ける一瞬があり、
作りごとでないその描写に、はっとする。
連綿と続く日々のなかに、私たちは「真実」が在ることを
十分に知っているからだ。　　　　
かけがえのない人生を我知らず、人はみな生きている。
そのことが切ないほどに胸を絞るのである。
