5.0 out of 5 stars 名作を手にとることのできた喜びを感じる一冊。, 2002/1/20
管制塔からの指示を受けた乗客が、必死に機を操作し生還するといった旧来のスタイルとはまた違う、独創的な航空パニック小説である。ハイテクを満載したジャンボジェットが高高度で完全減圧を起こすというアイディアの勝利だろう。

無酸素により脳機能の低下を起こした乗客は時に凶暴になり、事故を隠蔽しようとする軍や航空会社幹部は52便の抹殺を企てる。無線も使えないという絶望的な状況下で、わずかに生き残った乗客が繰り広げる決死のサバイバルには息をつく暇もない。ディテールの描き込みも丹念でリアル。帯の「一気読みを保証」の宣伝文句に偽りはなかった。

これは確かに面白い。まだ読んでいない人は気の毒。だが同時に羨ましくも思える（これから読めるのだから）。粗筋だけ確認すると、映画『大空港』『エアポート75』などを連想しがちだが、かなり違う。全然だーれも協力してくれないのだ。
人生に疲れてしまったオッサンが、出張先でたまたま遭遇した大惨事。操縦桿をこわごわ握った彼はやがて気が付く。航空会社の連中さえ、この機の墜落を望んでいることを。更には軍の戦闘機にまでつけ狙われ、客室はゾンビ化した乗客だらけ。まさに八方塞がり。しかし美人スッチーの手助けもあって、クソ度胸を発揮し始める。
悪玉にさえ「なんて腹の座った奴なんだ」と言わせる最後の見せ場。目に浮かぶような描写である。
悪者の心の中の葛藤や、動揺を描いた部分も面白く読めた。

　１９８２年に出版された小説を最新のテクノロジーに合わせて改訂したもの。「まだ読んでいない人は幸福です」というキャッチコピーに誘われて買ってしまいましたが、確かにおもしろい。アメリカ製の超音速旅客機という実在しない設定なのにまるで現実のように感じさせるのは著者の一人であるトマス・ブロックが大手航空会社パイロットだからか。

　また、よくあるパイロットが操縦できなくなり乗客が操縦をして・・・という設定ながらそのあとのひねりが読ませる。ただ、乗客の多くが脳障害を起こしてという状況が悲惨なので、その部分を星ひとつ減点したが一流の航空小説であることは間違いありません。航空ファンにも納得の一冊。
