表題作「走れメロス」は教科書で読んだと言う人も多いはず。
当時は太宰治など気にかけなかった中学生も、大人になるにつれ、太宰といえば、「斜陽」「人間失格」が代表作であり、破滅的思考の持ち主で、数度の自殺未遂を繰り返し、最期もやはり自殺だった-
と言う事を知っているだろう。
その太宰が、、あの中学生の時に読んだあんな健全な作品を残していると言う事実。　そこに多少の矛盾や疑問を感じたら是非再読する事を薦める。
これは「走れメロス」をはじめ、いわゆる太宰中期、荒んだ生活を改め、人間として再起を計った頃の作品を集めたものである。
これを読むと、太宰がいかにまともな人間なのかがよく解る。まともであるが故に社会との軋轢が生ずる。それをニヒリズムに逃げるのではなく、真向から克服しようとしている。時々負けそうになりながら、じめじめと泣きながら、、。
その姿は「富嶽百景」に克明にしるされている。

これは前置きとして、走れメロスの作品自体は素晴らしい。
しかし、「友情」について真に美しいと語り継がれるのにはいささか疑問が残る。この作品は、人間の傲慢、あるいは真髄を問うべき物語ではなかろか。メロスは刑場に向かう途中、悪い夢とだいされた「己の弱さ」を示す。そして、泉の水によって思い直すわけだが、セリヌンティウスの弟子と遭遇し彼はこう言っている〜「間に合う間に合わぬは問題ではない、人の命も問題ではない。もっと恐ろしく大きいものの為に走っているのだ」ここで自分という感情が入る。良い悪いではなく、人間の危機的感情を表した作品ではなかろうか。

　私は今高校生ですが、表題作の｢走れメロス｣は今読んでみても胸
を熱くさせられるような作品だと思います。特に、メロスが一度は
無二の友を裏切ることを考えながらも、思い直し再び走り出す場面
には感動を覚えます。

　このような短い描写・作品が心を打つことは、一般に<暗い>
イメージをもたれている太宰文学が、《人間の普遍的な面》

を捉えている証なのでは、とも思います。
　またそれゆえに太宰の入門書として、教科書に採用させられたり
しているのでしょう。
